As the two girls entered the hall, they were stunned by the bright lights and the trays spread across the hall. They were empty, but Saffron had a feeling they wouldn't be for long. As she took in the sights around her, a boy came up to Beth and jabbed her side. She spun round and spat, "What was that for?!"
The boy scowled.
"Didn't they tell you, they don't accept tramps at Hogwarts! I wouldn't be surprised if you were a Mudblood, and a poor one at that."
Beth grabbbed a clump of the boys hair and yanked it up. He helped but struggled to move. Beth put her face inches away from his and snapped, "Nobody pushes me around and gets away with it. You don't mess with me, Pureblood. Get it?"
He nodded, a pained expression across his face.
She let him go and joined Saffron. She calmly continued walking towards the end of the hall. Saffron was gobsmacked.
"How did you do that?"
"When you live in Dead-End Street, you need to learn to fend for yourself. Mum sleeps all day and night and Dad's never home, so I decided it's down to me to look after myself,"
Saffron felt sorry for Beth. She had always taken for granted what she had, and never thought about how tough life could be for some people.
They lined up at the end of the hall and waited to be sorted. They felt hundreds of eyes staring at them.
"Malfoy, Saffron,"
Saffron stepped forward. The Sorting Hat was placed on her head. It hesitated, then began muttering, "Clever, yes, very clever, but cunning too. Malfoys do well in Slytherin, there's no doubt about that. Yet, I feel she would place better in another house..."
"Ravenclaw," Saffron said.
"Oh, a Legilimens I see," the hall burst into murmurs. Only few Legilimens had ever been to Hogwarts before.
"Well, then, I guess you know where you are going. Congratulations!" the hat cried.
Saffron joined the Ravenclaw table. Her mother had been placed in Ravenclaw and she was proud that she had followed in her footsteps.
A girl scooted up next to her. She had black frizzy hair and dainty freckles.
"You're really a Legilimens?"
"Yes, and you are Amy Johnson, aged 11 years and 56 days, you live in Derbyshire at number 23 Main Street opposite the Duke's Head Restaurant."
"Wow, that's so cool!"
"I'm Saffron Malfoy, nice to meet you Amy,"
Amy gasped. It seemed as if she were very easily amazed.
"Wow, you're Scorpius Malfoy and Cassidy Weasley's daughter? And your mum's cousin is Albus Potter! The son of Harry Potter?"
Saffron frowned. It seemed as if this girl knew more about her than she did.
"Haven't you heard the tales? About Cassidy, Albus and Scorpius' journey through time?"
What?! Her parents were in stories and she didn't even know?!
Meanwhile, Beth was waiting for her name to be called.
"Brownlee, Elizabeth,"
Beth stepped up and the Sorting Hat was placed on her head.
"Hmmm, this is very difficult. She's a fighter, but maybe foolish too. Strong mind, fairly bright, very settled in her choices. But loving too- doesn't let people get too close to her in fear she will hurt them."
"Gryffindor!"
Beth smiled, but her eyes met with Saffron and they sighed. Theybwould most likely go down different paths from then on.
But at least Saffron had Amy. They began to chat as the plates filled up with mountains of food.
Maybe Hogwarts would be the making of them.
