Chapter 5
Chris POV
I wonder which book I should bring her today. So many choices...
I slowly ran my hand along the side of the covers, organized by author on the shelves, until my hand stopped on a green cover, The Wizard of Oz.
It's not my usual day, but I'm not going to volunteer, I just wanted to see her.
As usual, I don't knock and just open the door, but for my surprise, she's not there. This is the first time she hasn't been in her room, I hope she's OK.
Closing the door after me, I walk around the hallways, still hoping to find her. I spot her red hair in one of the chairs from the cafeteria, and I don't recognize who she's talking to. I've been working here for almost a year now. I know every person in this place, and that figure is strange to me. Also, I've never seen her actually talking to anyone, much less laughing, like she was really having fun.
My heart tightens a little, my vision focusing on the guy in front of her. He looks just as broken, like everyone in this damn place.
Lost in my thoughts, I don't realize I'm standing next to her. Until he looks at me, and her head follows his.
"Hey Chris!"
Her cheerful voice makes me happy, but that feeling is taken away when I remember the guy sitting with her. "Hey Margot."
"You don't volunteer today, right? What are you doing here?"
"Nothing I Just- I wanted to bring you a new book."
She takes the book, without even looking at it. "Thanks, but I haven't really finished the last one. I've been... busy." With the last word, she gives him a side smile, and I pray she didn't hear the loud crack my heart just made.
I turn my attention to him. "I've never seen you around."
"Yeah... I just got here, I'm Ed."
"I'm Chris, I volunteer here sometimes." A fake smile appears involuntarily on my lips, followed by another on his lips.
I waved goodbye and walked away, not knowing what else to say to the girl who just broke my heart.
I never really told her I liked her, I just kind of wished she knew.
