Chapter 6, Part 2
Margot POV
The way is long, but we avoid being seen. At this hour, I don't have to worry about that, so I just walk carelessly on the big corridors.
Light is not a problem, and I easily find my way to the hidden stairs.
Taking a few steps up I realize I'm more tired than I thought, but I keep going. I feel like I need him, his comfort. Even though he's only been here for a short period of time, I feel I can rely on him, which I hope is not a huge mistake.
The stairs are dirty and filled with dust, and I remember I'm barefoot.
When I finally get to the heavy door, for my relief, the brick is there, strongly holding itself in place.
As I open the door, I feel my cheeks getting warmer. They betray me as my sight catches him lying on the ground relaxed, his arms bend under his head.
He seems so peaceful, I debate internally whether I should bring him into the night's events or not. Before I can choose, he sits and turns around. When he spoke, his voice sounded cheerful.
"Hey."
Hearing him, even for this split second, erased all the millions of thoughts rushing through my brain. I fight the impulse to run in his direction, hug him and never let go. Instead, I walk calmly and sit beside him, resting my head in his shoulder. I close my eyes and try not to think of what happened.
Sensing something was wrong, he lightly strucks my hair.
"I'm here if you need someone to talk to."
"Thank you." I wrap my arms around his waist and hug him as tight as I can without hurting him, not taking my head off his shoulder. "Lora was pregnant."
"Was?" His tone showing more confusion than surprise.
I sigh. "She lost it."
His body tightens, he was clearly not expecting something like this to happen today.
I realize he's looking at me, waiting for me to say anything else when a tear left my eyes and he quickly dried it with his thumb, before it even got to the middle of my cheek.
Taking a deep breath, I open my eyes and look at his. I imagine this night without him. After seeing Lora, I'd go back to bed, cry myself to sleep and cry some more in the morning. Death always hits me hard and throws me on the floor.
He brings his lips closer, and I'm just frozen in place. Partly because of the cold and partly because I was lost in my thoughts again.
When his lips touch mine, I turn my head away. "Not tonight." He's clearly hurt, but gives me a gentle kiss on the cheek. "I don't want the memory of my first kiss to be marked by something sad."
"You've never kissed anyone?" He seems genuinely shocked. "How can someone as pretty as you have never kissed anyone?" My cheeks fail me one more time, as blood rushes under my skin. He lets a tiny laugh escape through his perfect lips, and tucks a strand of hair behind my ear. "Don't worry, we have time."
I close my eyes again, feeling the cold breeze on my face. We stayed in silence for a while, not wanting this moment to end.
"We should go to your room." I sighed. "I told Lora I'd be there if she needed anything."
Without a word, he got up and stuck a hand out for me, which I took, and we walked down holding hands. Now that I was with him, the way back seemed shorter and ended quickly.
His door was the same way I left it. This time, he opened it for me, and we walked in together.
The bed was as messy as I remembered, but he got in it without any hesitation, and tapped lightly on the other side for me to join him.
I walked awkwardly to the other side of the bed, and sat carefully on his white sheets.
He put his arm around my shoulders, and I laid my head on his chest, getting closer than I expected.
This time, I struck his hair, until I felt myself slip away to the dreamland.
Knocks woke me up. I'm guessing he was also sleeping, because by the third knock he hadn't moved yet. I got up carefully not to wake him, and opened the door just a crack. Seeing it was Lora, I opened it more, enough for her to be able to see the bed.
"You're actually with him? I just had to see it with my own eyes." At this point, Ed was awake and standing right beside me. "Saint little Margot with a guy." She made a fake surprise face, and covered her mouth with her hand.
Before I could process that scene and answer, she laughed and walked away. Ed visibly didn't know what to do or if I wanted him to stand up for me, so I answered with a side smile, hopping to show him that I didn't care when I actually cared a lot.
I felt myself slip away again, and strong hands catching me mid air. Everything went dark.
---
"Mom." I screamed over and over again with no answer.
My sister's body laid next to me, her head tipped to the side resting on the car window. Blood came out from a cut in her forehead, running all the way to her neck. Her face looks pale and lifeless, her skin cold.
The smell of burned metal and smoke fills the air. I follow my mom outside the car, my sister's body still inside.
My mom's sitting on the ground, her knees in her chest, shaking.
I run to her and hug her. It's all I can do.
