Ayano's POV
"Why'd you accept the role of Juliet?" Kyoko asks, leaning towards me. I'm blushing so hard right now, I can't think straight!
And right on cue, Chitose has another nosebleed. The others, except me and Kyoko, attend to her.
"It's my favorite play, okay? I just wanted some entertainment for the Winter Dance." I tell her trying to sound confident, "No one else would accept the role of Juliet." I pause, "N-No special feelings behind it or anything!"
An amused look stays on Kyoko's face, then lights up with curiosity.
"Speaking of the Winter Dance, why even is there one?" She asks.
I am taken back by the question. Though, what I'll tell her would be half of the reason.
"It's for the school. To let us feel free or something. And it's kind of the school's Christmas Party in a way." I tell her.
"And the play is just for comic relief?" She asks, raising an eyebrow.
"Not entirely..." I trail off. Luckily, she doesn't press on.
"Why does Romeo and Juliet get to lead the dance floor?" Yui asks, leaving Chitose to the care of the lower classmen.
"Because... They're Romeo and Juliet?" I ask more than answer.
Kyoko snaps her fingers and furrows her eyebrows then mumbles something.
"Hey Ayano," she says seriously, "I've been meaning to ask you something."
My heart suddenly explodes, my stomach is filled with butterflies and I could feel heat in my cheeks. On what she says next, will determine everything.
"What does Sensei mean by 'modern Romeo and Juliet'?"
I mentally face palm. I shouldn't expect much of this idiot. And, as far as I know, this girl is straight! While I'm here struggling to know who I like.
"It'll be modern. Both families are rich, but have financial problems against both parties. And, instead of going the easy way, they went with the hard way." I reply with a blank face, trying to recover from her stupidity.
"Easy way?"
"They didn't let their kids marry. It would've been a lot easier if they would."
"Why would it be easier?"
"I dont know. Why don't you investigate, Sherlock?"
"I'd rather not." Kyoko grins.
A few moments pass before I could muster up some courage to talk to Kyoko.
"K-Kyoko..." I start.
"Hm?"
"What we did last year. Will we do it again this year?" I ask her.
"Oh right! Thanks for reminding me Ayano. Alrighty guys! Someone call Himawari and Sakurako," she orders.
"I'll do it!" Chinatsu and Akari chorus. We all laugh.
As soon as the lower classmen got out, we started discussing.
"So," Yui tells Kyoko, "did you make the names and numbers already?"
Kyoko gives a nod while rummaging through her bag. Her eyes light up as she finds her desired item.
"Here!" She says as she plops the purple box on the table.
'Christmas', it says.
"The names are for the exchange gifts." Yui explains. "The numbers have two sets, up to four."
"What are the numbers for?" Chitose asks. She was okay now, though she still has nosebleeds and I knew why.
"For the pairs." Yui replies.
Well, if my pair is Toshino Kyoko, then it can't be helped!
"Speaking of pairs," Chitose asks, "we will have a dates?"
"Why would we make pairs if there weren't dates?" Kyoko mutters for us four to hear.
"When will we do that?" I ask.
"On Christmas Day!" Kyoko smiles.
You've gotta be kidding me!
"We can change the date if you want." Yui suggests.
"No thanks, it's fine." I stammer.
"The dates end in the night," Yui continues explaining, "and on New Year, we were hoping if you'd all like to spend it in Kyoko's house."
"That's fine." Chitose says, "My grandmother is on vacation and won't come back until after Christmas break, and Chizuru will also be spending Christmas and New Year at her friend's house." She smiles.
"My mom will be on a business trip during those days and she was hoping I could spend those days at the Ikeda household." I tell them.
"But my grandmother won't allow anyone other than me and Chizuru on those days." Chitose explains.
"Don't worry!" Kyoko grins. "You can spend those days at my house, Ayano! My mom and I will be glad to have you!" She beams.
"On most days, I'm glad you're actually considrate." Yui mutters.
"Don't underestimate me."
A loud boom erupts the silence.
"Good afternoon Senpais!" Sakurako's voice booms.
"Ahh," Kyoko grins, "My favorite kouhai!"
"Favorite kouhai?" Akari furrows her eyebrows and pouts, "If she is your favorite kouhai, then-- then there's no helping it I guess..."
"Aww, don't worry Akari-chan." Chitose soothes, "You're my favorite kouhai!"
Akari sniffles. "Really?"
Chitose gives a nod and Akari claps her hands together.
"Now that that's settled," Himawari starts. "We are called in for...?"
"Christmas!" Kyoko shouts while fist pumping the air.
"Right." Yui mumbles. She quickly explains whats going on and what we are going to do for this Christmas and New Year.
Looks like I'm spending the holidays with everyone! Especially with her... at her house... Ayano, you are NOT gay!
I sigh. Time to get back on track then. "Guys, the exchange gifts and the dates."
"Right. Thanks, Ayano." Kyoko smiles.
"Okay then," Yui instructs, "1st years first then 2nd years."
So one by one the we all grab a number, we are also strictly instructed not to open it yet until the second round. We each all have two pieces of paper unopened.
"1..." All of us count down, suspense building.
"2..." I'm scared.
"3!" This is the end.
