Hi. My name's Mel. It's not short for Melanie or Melissa or Melodie or anything. It's just Mel.... as in Mel's Burger Palace, which by the way, my mom named me after because...well, who doesn't love Mel's.
Up until today, I gotta say, life was gravy. Yeah, I'm one of those girls that no matter what crap happens to her, she will always have friends, which is a good thing cause in the past year, crap's been dropping on me like rain. But I gotta say, there has actually never been a period where I've been friendless and alone, at least not for more than a week. But everyday, as I walk through the hallways of penance known as High School, I walk through the same grounds and see people, dark and miserable, most eating lunch alone next to the dumpster or in the toilet or just not eating. They talk to nobody, and nobody talks to them.
Do I talk to them? No, I am ashamed to say that up until this point I have paid them not the slightest heed. I saw them as creatures to engulfed in their own sadness to enjoy the simple pleasures of life, like winning a double coupon for Happy Meal at McDonalds.
But, all that changed.
I guess I can start at this point.

"Who?" I slurped by Milk Shake, draining the cup of any lquid that might have remained. Since we were in a public area, I resisted the urge to burp.
"Aaron," said my friend, Chelsea, "Aaron Santiagos. Don't tell me you don't remember him."
A vision of an akward skinny pimply boy arose in my head as I finally let out a inni-mini burp. "Yeah, I think I remember him. Pimply Aaron?"
Chelsea nodded. "Yeah, well, now he's known as Millionaire Aaron."
I badly needed another milkshake. "Hey, good for him." I drummed my hands on the table top for a minute, then finally got up. "I'm gonna get another milkshake. Want anything?"
Chelsea shook her head. "Diet remember?"
I rolled my eyes at her before going off towards the counter. I don't know why she bothered. She looked perfect just the way she was. She was the classic, all-American beauty, you know, blonde-hair, blue-eyes, manicured cuticles and all. Plus she was slender as a needle.
I, on the other hand, was more on the plump side, you know, sort of small and round, with a lightly dark skin, messy looking naturaal hair (brown and wicked curly), and cuticles destroyed fromk over-biting.
And frankly, I was okay with that. well, now I was.
At the counter, I said to the brown-haired server, "Another banana milkshake please."
He looked at me and smiled knowingly as he poured some into a red cup. "You've been downing these things like they're going off menu. Something on your mind?"
I smiled sarcastically. "Yeah, and I'm so going to air out all my problems to some random stranger."
He shrugged lightly. "Technically, I'm not a stranger. I see you here every day after school, kinda like a standing date," He waggled his eyebrows as he accentuated the word date. "So that makes it....." He pretended to think about it, "About 50 dates so far. Hey, in some countries, we would be .." He leaned in a conspirationaly whisper, "Married.'
I actually laughed at that. Not that he wasn't cute, I mean he had this sort of goofy cuteness on him.
"That's a good one..."I glanced at his name tag, "Ethan.'
He waggled his eyebrows again. "Hey, we even know eachothers names. How about it then? We can cast away the shackles of family fortunes, pay no attention to what our friends say and ride off into the sunset.... just as soon as my shift is over."
I laughed again. Then my eyes caught sight of the newest couple to enter Mels and the smile was wiped right off my face.
Luke Galagher and Rachel Grant.
"Oh shit," I muttered, and tried to look away but it was too late. They already caught sight of me. A mixture of different yet similar emotions crossed their face as they stared at me. Recognition, shock, hurt, then cool indifference.
I saw Luke whisper something in Rachel's ear and she nodded. she tore her gaze away from me abruptly and started heading towards a booth. Luke gave me one last glance, that revealed nothing and kept walking to join Rachel
"What was that about?" asked Ethan.
I swallowed through the lump that had suddenly delveloped in my throat. "I really need that Milkshake."
One milk shake later, I was calmer as I went to join Chelsea back at the seats. She looked concerned.
"You okay?" she asked.
I nodded and saluted her with my free hand. "Better than ever." I took another long sip of the milk shake and winced, hand flying to forehead. "Ugh. Brain Freeze."
"How many of those have you had?" asked Chelsea.
I smiled goofily as I plopped down on my seat.
"Is something bothering you?" Chelsea asked.
I rolled my eyes at her. "Chelsea, you of all people know, I'm not an emotional eater."
"No, but you're an emotional drinker,' she said, "What's Up?" She glanced behind me and said, "Oh"
I knew who was seated behind me. I didn't need to turn around. But I did anyway, and I found myself staring into the most shockingly blue eyes I have ever seen.
Pouty lips curled. "Hello, " said the deep masculine voice. 'I thought it was you."
(A/N: Yeah i know this chapter's short. It was more of a prologue than anything else except not quite becuase it wasn't quite as informative. If u read, plz comment. Voting or fanning is up to u. Thx.)
