Chapter 2

I was running through the forest as I heard a howl break through the silent night, telling me the beast had found me again. The wind swept around me as I ran away from the growing growling's that were catching up to me. I closed my eyes as the fear of the beast catching up to me sit in leading to me tripping over a tree root falling to the ground. When I turned the beast was leaning over me snapping its sharp pointed teeth at my head. All I could think of doing was to scream hoping someone would hear me, but only came out as a whimper.

The beast lower its head to look me back in the eyes as I watch once again as its eyes turn from penetrating yellow   to the cavernous brown color like it did those nights all over again. It brought its nose along my jawline and started sniffing me, before I felt it tongue licking me along my neck to my shoulder. I knew then I was about to be eaten and wouldn't be returning home to my love once. That was the last thought I had before I felt the piercing pain of its bit laying next to the area where it had just licked me, only to wake up in my room.  

I looked over at the open window when I felt the cold breeze whirled into the room making me shiver. I hadn't had a nightmare about the beast in years, was I letting that anxiety getting the better of me knowing I was about to face the beast once again. I had been planning what to do if I had to come across the beast for years now, so why was it different in my dream?

I peeked out the window taking in the wining gibbous moon. At first appearance you think it was a full moon, but if you looked closely you could see how the very tip of the crescent was missing. Though now being older I was able to see that the moon didn't look its pearl white tint, but now it had a slight hint of pink within it. It was a sign the Blood Moon was soon to be upon us leading to me wondering about my dream once again.

I remember once asking Grandma if I was able to stay with her during the Blood Moon Sacrifice, but was told it was impossible once I was of age.  She never fully told me why this was, only to say that when the time is right, she would let me know all I needed to know about our family and the Blood Moon. Time was running out though and I need all those unanswered questions answered soon, or there would be no hope for me.

Looking back at the moon above me, I knew the sun would be rising soon since the moon always sat in the eastern field by Hunter's Forest. I knew if I tried to go back to sleep it would be pointless since my mother be waking me up soon, so I got up to get dressed in my cotton white dress to see if anyone else was up in the village, besides the night guards.

I walked out the door about the time my mother was getting up. I took in her dim dark hair with signs of gray laying within it. Her eyes had dark circle under them now from the stress of the Blood Moon rising. She was scared I would end up in the same faith as Penelope, but she didn't know I was hoping it would. I wanted to find my cousin and the only way I could was to let the beast take me. Then again, I also knew that normally only one girl gets chosen, so I just had to hope I would be the chosen one.

"I'm going for a walk around the village. I'll be back soon." I told her walking out the door before she could question me any further. She didn't like me walking among the village when the sun was still down and had told me that only girls with bad habits do such things, but that wasn't me. I just enjoy the crisp night air and how everything seems fresh right before the sun came to heat it all up.    

I walked down the dirt road taking in all the homes along the way. Looking up at the windows to see people waking up to lit their lanterns to get ready for the day. Some people's homes were above their business like the blacksmith and the baker of the town. Where others lived in small shacks similar to mine most were the hunters, like my father, or town folks who did odd jobs for other people.
