The White Lilly

Chapter 3 – Hunger

I was taken back at how fresh everything looked, as scene after scene rolled past my window things despite my vision of things, the view each time I took a glance showed me something vibrant yet alive in its own way. Jamie seemed content enough, headphones back in his ears with his fingers happily tapping to whatever melody is capturing his attention. The taxi driver too also seemed happy with himself, his radio on but slightly quieter than usual, courteous to his passengers private listening. I wish I was as happy as them, don’t get me wrong I am happy to be back, just being in a small space with someone I don’t know, I’m a little on the edge despite my keenness to get to know him better.

Hunger bloomed deep within my belly, hunger wanting to know more about the Adonis beside me, yet at the same time a hunger of the different kind, God I was hungry. I hadn’t eaten a single thing since I stepped on the plane, and the only thing I could have consumed to stoke the fire in my belly I chose to throw over Jamie, well I guess there’s a pro and con to everything. Pro I ended up sitting next to hunk of the year; con I’m sitting here trying to hide the techno rumbles coming from within me.

“Hungry still?” a voice snapped me out of my daydream, a silky, husky voice.

    “Huh?”

Turning around in the only direction that the voice could have possibly come from, Jamie had discarded his headphones from his ears and was casually facing me, he must have been watching me daydream, oh God how embarrassing.

“From what I can remember, we’re nearly there. Do you daydream a lot, or is that you’re normal face?” he couldn’t hide his smirk as he asked me.

“Oh no I, I daydream a lot. It’s habit really; from when I was younger I daydreamed to escape from people telling me I’d never make it back here again.”

“Why would anyone say something like that to you?”

“I have no idea, all I knew was daydreaming was going to help me keep dreaming and wishing that I would come back. I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me otherwise.”

Jamie smiled and clapped my shoulder gently, my clothes protecting and providing a barrier between my skin and his.

“That’s the idea, my kind of thinking exactly.”

“Yeah? Well I know we only met five hours ago but I believe you.”

Smirking he removed his hand from my shoulder, placing it back gently on his muscular thigh. If someone can relate to me and take to me this quickly, I’ll have to be careful when it comes to the official night of Mardi Gras.  It’s highly unlikely that he’ll be with me right up until that day in a weeks’ time, but a girl can dream, and that I do, a lot.

All too soon the taxi came to a halt, my time alone with Jamie had come to an end and now I would have to share him with whoever resided within the diner.  My door seemed to open by itself before I noticed the hand gripped around the handle, Jamie as ever the gentleman had opened it for me, note to self, he’s a true gentleman.

“Thank you” I said as I stepped out onto the gravel beneath me.

    “You’re welcome.”

“So this is where you came as a kid?”

“Yeah, it’s changed a bit, guess it can’t be helped.” He shrugged.

“Change seems to be everywhere, can’t escape it can’t ignore it. Does it upset you that it’s changed?”

He shook his head; his face gave away nothing if he wasn’t telling the truth.

“No not really, I agree with you actually. There’s no point getting upset about what once was that won’t be again, memories are all I need.”

I couldn’t help but blink at the poetry of his words; it’s as if William Shakespeare himself was serenading me with his linguistic genius. It took me a moment to break away from the enchanting mantra before I could reply.

“Couldn’t have said it better myself.” Saying his words back to him seemed to lift the obvious pang of his memories, rewarding me with his dazzling smile.

Paying off the driver for his excellent service, we headed inside to be greeted by a refreshing 50’s theme diner. Plush red leather booths and waitressed clad in pink ruffled poodle skirts, complete with authentic four-wheeled roller skates, wow I can see why he loved this place, it’s  like a little pocket of the past deposited here in Louisiana

“What’re you having?” Jamie said softly, almost as if he was dipping back into the tone of the locals.

“Whatever you’re having.” I simper a little as I watch him.

“Sounds good.” He smirked, heading off to the shiny vinyl-like bar, leaving me to find a place for us to sit.

There was a vacant spot right at the back corner of the diner, I took my chance and claimed it as ours with me on one side and my purse situated next to me. Music that sounded like early Beatles provided a great distraction for me until Jamie would be in my company again; this allowed me to reflect on everything that happened up until now. Oh yes! That’s right, I was meant to let my mom know when I got here, damn I forgot. My phone was chock full of messages when I turned it on, hearing the now annoying ping after ping as each new message popped up.

    *Safe flight Lilly sweetheart*

*Let me know when you land okay?*

*Have you landed yet Lilly? Call me*

*Are you there yet? I’m getting worried now Lilly*

*You’re going to be in serious trouble if you don’t call me soon*

These were just SOME of the many messages from my erratic mother, I hurried a reply detailing all that happened in hopes that would sate her for a while, it probably wouldn’t but it’s all I could do until I was away from Jamie where he wouldn’t interrupt me.

    “One lemonade for the lady.”

Looking up I saw the fresh face of Jamie as he placed cool sparkling lemonade, decorated with a vibrantly yellow lemon slice, right in front of me as my phone was put back in the place I was happy to keep it in for a while.

“Thank you, how much do I owe you?”

“Aw now c’mon you don’t owe me nothin’, I said I was going to take you for a drink didn’t I?”

    “Yes”

“So there you have it, just enjoy it and relax okay?”

I couldn’t argue with that, so far he’s not been wrong a single time any time it’s come to me and my stubborn ways.

“You hungry?” he asked, not stopping to wait for my reply to his last statement.

    “Mmm, very.”

In fact, I was hungry, very hungry. Not only just hungry for the delicious-smelling food’s aroma that wafted straight to me, but hungry for more information about the guy in front of me, I still didn’t know enough about him as my hungry heart would be satisfied with. Time to get to work.
