"Hasetsu," Kaneki said to himself, dull grey eyes scanning over a map. IT was large and wrinkled, routed hastily marked on it in red marker. He traced his vision along the scarlet lines that all bloomed outward from Tokyo on the map, trying to get a sense of where this small town even was. "Is it even on the map?"
Ayato yanked the map from his hands, pointing to a small dot a couple of inches away from Tokyo, barely visible. Above it was marked Hasetsu and Yurio's name was scribbled next to it in parentheses.
"Right here, idiot."
Kaneki took the map back from Ayato and pulled the hood of his black jacket over his head. He didn't bother to respond to the other's crude remark, and just traced his pale finger along the only route than could get them there. Judging by the map's scaling, it was actually really far away from where they stood in Tokyo, and would take them days on foot. Seeing as they were dangerous and wanted criminals, what little of Tokyo's public transportation that remained was out of the question. Their only option was to steal a car and hope it could get them there, if they could do that at all.
Ayato snatched the map back from Kaneki a second time, gripping it in his hand tightly. It crumpled from the pressure, folding in on itself a bit. "Are you going with me to do this?" He asked Kaneki, standing on the edge of the abandoned building.
"Do you need me to?" Kaneki asked in his monotone and bored voice, seeing Ayato's face ignite with rage at the simple question.
"No! I can do it myself!" He yelled lividly, agitated about Kaneki's response. "I'm not a kid!" Kaneki didn't elect to tell him that he actually was a kid, and simply left it at that. This was Ayato's mission, it had nothing to do with him whatsoever. They had spies in Hasetsu already, they could give him the backup he needed.
"I wonder what new books are out," he said to himself, looking over the gloomy, sunless Tokyo sky. It was stark white, and it almost looked like glass to him. A sigh curled from his lips as he pulled himself into a sitting position, eyes staring out into the distance.
Ayato, who stood nearby, sneered at Kaneki's meaningless statement, trying to form some kind of plan in his head. After not being able to, he simply threw out any idea of a plan, and, almost serendipitously, a car began to drive by, slowly swerving through the wreckage Aogiri had caused.
"Bingo."
Fiery wings erupted out of Ayato's upper back, the kagune's red and purple colors swirling around and mixing together. Seeing his chance, he lept off of the side of the building, almost free-falling before he landed himself right in front of the car. The young teenage girl driving slammed on the brakes, her eyes wide in fear. Ayato punched a hole clean through the windshield, causing the glass to shatter and rain down around them in small, deadly shards. He could see the fear and desperation of a cornered animal in the human girl's eyes. It reminded him a bit of himself when he was younger, and rage boiled in his veins.
"P-P-Please...don't h-hurt me," the small girl choked out amidst tears. Her voice quivered and cracked.
"Too bad." In an instant, she was dead, and Ayato had thrown her forcefully from the car. Her small, petite body thudded against the side of the road, blood trailing from her parted lips.
"Let's get the fuck out of here," he muttered to himself as his boot slammed against the gas, shooting the car across the deserted streets at a record speed. The tires squealed as tread marks were made across the tar. Those were the only sounds that echoed across the hollowed out 20th ward as Kaneki watched Ayato disappear from view.
