Iris Hunter.

A plain girl from the North side. Limited family, limited friends. Never has she been in the wrong. But she's always in the hospital. A severe
Asthmatic with triggers like grass, pollen, weeds, pet dander, smoke, pretty much anything.

Sweet Pea.

Infamous Serpent from the wrong side of the tracks. Always in trouble and always causing it. A broken boy with a broken past. Drinking at the White Wyrm and living his life as a delinquent, he has never been better, but that's before he met her.

"Iris! Come get your inhaler!" My mom yelled from downstairs.

"Be right there!" I yelled back, pulling on my black Chuck's and tying the laces. I stood up from where I sat on my floor. I whipped my head around looking for my missing backpack. I look at my red and grey bed sheets and find it sitting in a nest of my pillows. I get up from the hardwood floor of my bedroom, pushing myself up towards my bed. Swing in my backpack around my shoulder, I run downstairs almost slipping on the first landing.

"Mom, inhaler. I also might need my EPIxz mfdkj pen today too. We're going on the field trip to the planetarium today." I told my mom, still catching my breath from my almost stumble down the stairs.

"Okie dokie, honey. I'll grab it for you." Her southern accent seeping through. Her slippers scrape across the tile floor of my kitchen. She walks over to a weaved basket on the granite counter top. She pulls out an inhaler and a small white box with a prescription stuck on it.

"Here hun. You remember how to use it right? Open the li-"

"Yeah, mom, don't worry. I definitely remember. I've used it a hundred times." I interrupted her. I love my mom but she worries so much. My asthma has gotten a bit worse over the years. I was almost allergic to everything. That was barely an exaggeration. I live close to Sweetwater River so there is a bunch of triggers like pollen and grass particles. I love the outdoors and being so close to it but it really makes my lungs want to turn themselves inside out.

I pick my backpack up and race out the door getting into my little Honda Civic I got for my 16th birthday. I drive down the familiar roads and get to Riverdale High, home of the Bulldogs. I pull in a parking space and go inside passing some kids I recognize.

I stop at one of my amazing friends, Jughead Jones. He was a misfit, like me and we also shared that we love to write. We often found ourselves in Pop's Choc'lit Shop writing about worlds and cities far away from our little town.

"Hey Jug." I said to him nonchalantly, nodding to him.

"Oh, hey Iris. You going on the field trip?" We turned as the bell rang and walked to our homeroom class.

"Yep. I can't wait. Are you?" He nodded and we both made our way to the back of the class. Already seated was Toni Topaz, a well-known member if the South-Side serpents and also our good friend. We sat down on both sides of her simultaneously on either side of her. We all chatted for a bit about happenings at school and Toni might have a crush on a certain redheaded Vixen and how Jughead hit a dead end on a led with the Black Hood.

Our talking ceased as our science teacher, Mr. Harry Hardman and the other class of his who were coming with us to the planetarium. Most of the kids in Mr. Hardman's second period class were Serpents with just a few Northsiders mixed in, the exact opposite of our class.

They all came and sat down in the empty seats, with a few left standing. The most notable and tall, was the Southside's infamous bad boy, Sweet Pea.

This boy gave a sense of a watching presence as Mr. Hardman talked to us about rules and when lunch was. Unlike most of the other Serpents in the room, Sweet Pea has is snake tattoo on his neck and not on his arm or chest. He sported his old, worm, almost fraying, leather jacket proudly as he stalked the halls of Riverdale High with his notably shorter best friend and wingman, Fangs Fogarty.

I couldn't lie to myself, as much as I wanted to. Sweet Pea was unbelievably attractive. With his black pushed back hair and firm set jaw that could cut me to pieces. But he was a man not to med trifled with, so I had to turn my attention back to Mr. Hardman who was now droning on about an assignment that was due tomorrow after the field trip.

After what felt like an eternity, Me. Hardman ended his sermon and led us all to the bus. I was one of the last to get on and most of the seats were already filled, at least where I sat up in the front of the bus. The back, on the other hand, had only one or two seats left, both of them already had one person in them.

I had to make my way to the back of the bus, stepping and stumbling over feet and backpacks. One of the seats that was open was closed as soon as I got in front of it by a backpack and a scary girl with a frown. The other had the also frowning Sweet Pea.

"Hey, all of the other seats are taken, can I sit here." My voice cam out as more of a whisper than an actual sound. He looked at me dead in the eyes.

"Uh, yeah, sure. Go for it."

My heart started beating again after stopping the second I opened my mouth. That kind of thing usually happens when I'm about to have an asthma attack, but the sudden lack of air in my trachea never happened and I found myself just plopping down in the seat.

Thankfully, Toni and Jughead were in the seat diagonal to ours and we began to talk again as we rode to the planetarium. I glanced at the boy sitting next to me. His long legs were haphazardly splayed under the bench in front of us and his head rested in his palm as he read a book that I didn't recognize.

His dark eyes quickly shot to mine so I returned my eyes and thoughts back to the conversation about new bike tires in front of me.

This was gonna be a long ride...
