How about a story where...
the male wolf (alpha duh) is harsh and barbaric. He comes to a pack and stands in front of them and goes on and on about how he's the new leader (your choice on why) and how he won't tolerate disrespect and the first is always be punctual. Then a she-wolf comes rushing up and apologises for being late and without even looking he commands his guards to tie her to the whipping post and deliver one lash for every minutes she was absent.

Anyway then she gets up and looks at him and he realises they're mates, his eyes soften. He yells for a doctors/ try's to apologise and molly coddle her etc.
and she can either have a submissive personality that infuriates him as he wants her to be his equal
Or a dominant personality that he hates because he wants her to be more obedient (first option is better btw ;))
Anyway she can ask him why he didn't recognise they were mates and his smell could have been taken while he was at war

And she can either have smelt him when she arrived late and he ignored her
Or she wolves don't smell their mates until after eye contact.
