when y/n is waiting for steve to return from a mission, all she finds is tony saying he had lost steve. the only thing she knew how to do after was sympathize with the only other person who knew what it felt like to lose someone so close.

set : after a : AoU and before ca : cw ; in the gray area between the two

warnings : mentions of death, slipping into depression, angst, has a happy ending though so a lil bit of fluff (this story has a lot of platonic tony x reader)

word count : 2037 (with a/n)

The first thing you see is the saddened face of Tony Stark walk into the building. He avoids your eyes, as if he was hiding something. You look to Vision and Natasha, standing behind him, searching their eyes for an answer.

"Tony? How'd the mission go?" You speak softly, like a mother does when she is comforting a child.

"I-I can't do this..." No sarcasm, no jokes, no normal Tony. He tries walking but only crumples to the floor, as if he could no longer support is own weight. You rush to his side, placing one hand on the side of his face and using the other to hold yourself up.

"Are you okay? Do you need a doctor?" He only shakes his head. "it's okay. You know you can talk to me, Tony."

"I don't want to. I... I can't do this..." You give him a confused look, and he only shakes his head in reply. What happened that was so bad that it has the infamous Tony Stark speechless?

cold bones, yeah, that's my love

"Before I let you go, where's Steve?" He's silent.

"I lost him and Wanda after firing onto the base. I-" He sighs, trying to word this the best way as possible. "I had them in my periphery when I fired, and the next thing i knew they were missing. Y/N, I'm so sorry. I-I should've searched longer or called them or- way to go, Tony, you've screwed up once again." You can feel the tears forming, and one slips down your cheek.

she hides away, like a ghost

"It's not your fault, Tony." Your voice is strained and weak. "You did what was right. Besides, he... he went the way he would've wanted. He went doing what was right. He deserves that honorable death."

does she know that we bleed the same?  don't wanna cry but i break that way

"He deserves a long life. He may have technically been ninety years-old when he got out of that stupid ice but he's only lived twenty years of that. He deserves more! He wanted to marry you, and have kids, and live a life full of happiness and protection of the things he loved! And I'm the one that screwed that up."  You sit there, soaking in his words, trying to come up with something that can counteract his thoughts. But your mind draws a blank.

"I'm gonna go... think on this for a while, I guess. I'll be in my quarters. I don't know if i'll be out for dinner." You slowly pick yourself up off the ground, traipsing towards your bedroom.
