Epilogue

Nina sat outside of the bodega, her mind elsewhere. She'd decided to go back to school. In all honesty, she missed it. She missed California, the busy school day and even her two jobs. Odd that she missed working. But she knew that she could do it this time around. She could get her scholarship back, she knew it deep down. And that was her plan. She was going to rule her college years, build up her grades and become a better student.

Usnavi came outside then, sitting next to his friend. "Hi Navi." Nina spoke. "Um...have you ever thought of what could happen if you'd done something different in your life?"

"No...to be honest, I can't even imagine thinking that."

"Oh." Nina suddenly felt ashamed of her feelings.

"But I know Benny has. Maybe you should talk to him." Nina shook her head, standing.

"I'm gonna go back to Mom. I'll talk to you later Usnavi." Nina ran home before the tears could fall. She ran into her mother's loving arms.

"Nina, talk to me. ¿Que paso?"

"I'm such a freak." The girl sobbed. "I am so sorry that you have such a messed up daughter."

"Do you really believe you're a freak? Because baby, you're not. You're strong, beautiful, kind, gentle and loving. You are my daughter and I love you more than anything. I love you so much mi hija."

"I love you too Mom." Nina said, feeling somewhat better.

"Have you decided about school?"

"I go back on Labor Day."

"I'm glad you're continuing to get your education. It'll be good for you." Camila kissed her daughter's head, holding her tighter.

Nina was sent on her way, a smile on her face. Benny had decided to fly down for Thanksgiving each year for two weeks. Then, Nina would come home for Christmas. They'd had it all figured out. And soon enough it would be over.

She would be a better student, a better person. Her friends and family were sure to be proud of her. And though she didn't know, Abuela was very proud.

I'm going to make a sequel. I just didn't have any ideas based on secrets anymore 😢. But hey, the sequel is coming! I can't wait to see what drama unfolds during Nina's senior year of college!
