When we first told people that I was pregnant, it was clear that they had doubts. Brad and I had been together since we were 17, we’re now 23 and we’ve been married for a year. According to people, we were too young to be having a child, but we knew that it was right, it was the right thing to do to complete our perfect little family. I had our gorgeous little boy Isaac a year and a half ago, and he’s beautiful. He’s got Brad’s curly hair, my blue eyes and the cutest chubby cheeks.
As I walked in from work, I threw my keys in the bowl and kicked my heels off, it’d been a tough day. I was greeted with the sound of my husband talking to Isaac.
“Daddy…say daddy” Brad pleaded
Isaac didn’t listen, he just stood with his hands on the edge of his cot, looking at Brad with a blank expression on his face. I stood at the door watching them, they were somewhat bonding. Brad had the day of work today, so had spent the day with Isaac whilst I was at work. The next thing I knew, Brad had grabbed Isaac’s bunny and was waving it in his face, making it’s hands move and trying to bribe him to say ‘bunny’.
“Who’s this? Who’s this? Bunny…Say Bunny”
Still nothing. I couldn’t help but laugh, he was seriously trying. He grabbed every object possible; a piece of fake pizza, a teddy bear, a fish, a toy dog, even our own dog Milo, but still nothing. Isaac clearly wasn’t bothered. Every time Brad tried to make him do something, he just stared at him blankly and let out a little giggle.
Keeping eye contact with Isaac, Brad started to feel around the floor for something else to grab that he could try and get Isaac to say. I could see it happening but before I could say anything the damage had been done. brad slammed his hand down on one of the loose lego bricks that he had left lying around when they had been playing when I left. His hand shot up immediately, shaking to try and get the pain away.
“SHIT!” He exclaimed
All of a sudden the baby began laughing.
“shit” his little voice giggled
Raising his head from the floor in horror, Brad looked our little boy in the eyes.
“shit” he giggled again
“No no no no no that’s a naughty word if your mummy ever finds ou..“
“Nice work Bradley” I giggled from the door
Startled from the sound of my voice, Brad turned around to face me.
“Oh shit”
“SHIT” the baby exclaimed a little louder
“Brad!” I giggled again, walking over and sitting with them
“Isaac, that’s a naughty word, never say that ever again”
“But Dad…”
“Never mind what daddy said, daddy’s a naughty boy”
Brad looked at you confused, but went along with what you said.
“Parenting done right” he whispered in your ear as you both laughed
