Chapter 4 - The Promise I Made Ages Ago
"" My old folks told me once that: ' to make something certain in this uncertain world is what we call a 'promise'." These are the words that kept on ringing down the depth of my soul. Reminding me the oath i made decades ago to a girl I decided to bound my heart with.
Im now at my 76th year. Decades could be seen with the wrinkles on my face and the white hairs on my head. Im fully convinced that my days are numbered. Grace is all I cling to,to fulfill a vow I made to Sally, the only girl I truely loved.
Sixty years ago, everything is still clear to me. The blue sky,the buzzing sounds of bees, the smell of freshly baked bread just a house away. Living in the country side was as simple as this, appreciating each new graces with my everyday labor
To attend school was optional to us. If you can read and write with a basic arithmetic, then you can now stop going to school. To be a farmer was the only option for us,or probably that's what the world, we were born with, taught us.But ignorance in our little town of San Victoria, was forbidden,we were encourage from childhood to attend Sunday School in the town's Baptist church. Faith was something instilled to our soul. Sunday was something I always look forward to. Maybe I just loved to hear the choir sing every morning.
And in pews of that old church was where I met Sally. The girl with the face I could never forget--til now.
She's a year older than mine, with the smile as innocent as a child. Fifteen years old, then, but her words seemed so mature with the voice as sweet as an angel. The girl I imagined spending the rest of my life with.
A mutual understanding between us bound us together. A young love proving that perhaps the world is not as bad as other thought.Something telling us that everything will be made right as long as we have each other.
(As Ryan was reading this part. He laughed a little saying "Probably Sally looked like Taylor Swift or Angelina Jolie!" Then he unfold the next page. The next page was folded as if ALLI,the owner, wanted to take note this page.)
But something in me. Like a burning fire within my soul that cannot be quenched. A will. A rightful rage. That consumes me day after day
I want MORE than this life.
Fields is not for me. Simple life is not for me. I was like a fool wanting for more--more than the abundant life the fields are willing to offer me.
But Sally didn't like that idea.
For her, my words were synonymous to going beyond the fields of the simple life in the field of San Victoria. For her that was a direct ingratitude toward the blessing this town was offering me.
I can never blame her. Probably, the fields was the only world she knew. But I know there was more to this life. There was more.
And I want to take Sally with me to discover what's beyond the borders of the town.
I love Sally. And I can never left her to this field.
(Ryan yawned, boredom kicked in to his blood vessels. He closed the book. but opened it again,he read what was written by ALLI in the pages he was reading.
'true love never fails'--written in red ink in the top of the page.
'Prince Charming,WHERE ARE YOU?'-- writen in the bottom of the page.
"Corny. Silly girl,I will find you tomorrow."
And closed his eyes. And imagined. Probably ALLI looked like Betty la Fea--a nerd girl with a hopeless love life.
To be continue . . .
