Once the medicine began to take effect Jordan was pushed behind the table, still holding Steph's hand. They nervously watched as the doctor draped Steph's belly and laid out the needed surgical instruments.
Fifteen minutes later Steph heard the shriek of their daughter.Jordan stood tears streaming down his face as the doctor laid their daughter onto Steph's chest .
"Does this beauty have a name ?" the nurse asked
Jordana Melissa " Jordan told the nurse proudly, leaning over to kiss the top of his new daughter's head
Steph was wheeled to a room next to the nursery as the staff took the baby to the neonatal intensive care unit to be monitored. She'd arrived six weeks early and needed special monitoring.
Jordan called his mother who informed the kids their sister was here.He gave her all the particulars for the baby because he knew she'd immediately ask for them. Once done on the phone he went to the local restaurant and bought them some dinner.
While Jordan was gone the staff got Steph settled and comfortable. When he got back Steph was sound asleep.Jordan left the roses he wanted to surprise her with next to her bed, Ringing for the nurse who carried their sleeping daughter into the room ,laying her in his arms
I took my new daughter from the nurse ,adjusting her in my arms as I watched my fiancee sleep. She'd been cramping pretty bad along with the pain of the incision as the local began to wear off so they gave her something to help .If it was morphine she'd be out for a little while.
Inspecting our new bundle I noted she had her mother's smile but I noticed small dimples in her chubby baby cheeks.
"Hey there sweet girl. You look like your sister and brother DJ." I cooed to the baby as she stared up at me with still clouded unfocused eyes. Her eyes were a dark blue but we all know that they can change.Chances are in favor of her eyes becoming brown like the rest of the family. She does have a chance of lighter eyes but its too soon to tell.
My thoughts were interrupted by the private nurse I'd hired coming into the room.
"Mr Knight I'd like to speak to you if that's okay"
I placed the baby back into her tiny bassinet and turned to face the nurse
"Is something wrong ?"
"Ms Dumont's blood work is a little off the doctor would like to run some more tests "
"Off ? As in? I mean it's normal for some levels to shift due to the birth of the baby and the bleeding before the cesarean right ?" I asked nervously.
Just then the obstetrician walked in.Thankfully this was a doctor who my family was very familiar with. He'd delivered many Knight children , my sons included.
"Jordan listen her white cell counts are really crazy. I'd like to ask a few more questions if that's okay. With Stephanie asleep I can't ask her and I know you'll be able to do so."
I sighed deeply a feeling of dread in my gut.
"How was she feeling before the bleeding began ?"
"Tired,fatigued "
"Any cramping ? Contractions ? Backache ?"
Thinking back I sat quiet for a moment.
"She hasn't said anything but I've been busy in the studio and getting things together for this tour "
"Jordan cancel the tour if my suspicions are correct you're going to need to be nearby " Dr. Rourke told him firmly.
"Just cut it straight what is the issue ?"
"We sampled her tissue while we were doing the cesarean and it tested positive for cancer,J " Dr Rouke's tone was sympathetic
I blinked twice and stared at him
Cancer ? Was he fucking serious right now ?
Swallowing hard I eyed him.
"Nah there must be a mistake ."
He shook his head and silently walked from the room.
I slid back into the chair next to the bed staring at my beautiful girls.
His words echoed over and over again in my head .
Steph's eyes fluttered open so I swiped at my eyes and plastered on the best smile I could muster just as Jordana screeched.
"Baby " Steph whispered sleepily when she saw me smiling at her but something was wrong and she could feel it.
"Hi gorgeous " I whispered pressing my lips to hers "You thirsty ?Hungry ? You still have a catheter in so no getting out of bed just yet"
"Thirsty " she whispered hoarsely.
I poured her some water from the pitcher the nurse filled and brought in recently, Putting a straw in the cup I held it up to her mouth as she smiled gratefully at me taking a long drink. When she finished she turned her head away from the cup.
Picking the baby up I helped Steph get comfortable to hold her.As soon as Jordana was in her mother's arms she instantly quieted. The sight stole my breath and caused my chest to ache.I couldn't lose the only woman I ever truly loved .Not now when I just found her
Steph's eyes met Jordan's over the baby's head
"What's wrong ?"
"Nothing babygirl " Jordan murmured trying to keep composure
He'd lose it later when he was alone. Later when Dr Rourke ran all his goddamned tests
Suddenly Jordan was hoping later would never come.
Their quiet moment fleeted when the nurse breezed back into the room.
She explained that the doctor had ordered a few tests and she was there to take her to them.Jordan found this strange considering the time but didn't argue knowing that the man knew what he was doing and Jordan trusted him completely.
