“God it’s early!”
My brother and I were standing in front of the apartment the next morning, both of us donning sunglasses.
“Bright too,” my brother grumbled.
“I need coffee.”
“Me too.”
I threaded my arm through his and we started off for the dinning hall. After we both had a cup of coffee in hand and my brother had a plateful of food, we headed to our table.
“I think I hate Mondays,” I said.
“Here’s your bagel.” My brother handed me my blueberry bagel.
“Ah deliciousness.”
“You better eat the whole thing.”
“Are you seriously going to eat all that?” I pointed at his tray.
“Every last morsel.”
Sophie sat down on his other side with her own tray of food. “I hate Mondays.”
I smiled. “At least I’m not the only one.”
“Why are you wearing your sunglasses inside?”
“The fluorescents hurt my eyes.”
“In another words, she’s hiding the dark circles under them,” my brother commented.
“Didn’t sleep?”
“Not very well. I think your dream catcher is deficient.”
“Nightmares again?”
“Yeah. Last week sort of…dragged them all back to the surface.”
“Michael can’t help?”
“Michael isn’t here. That’s the problem.”
“I’m sorry.” She reached out and touched my arm. “When’s he coming back?”
“June. Hopefully.”
“That’s a long time from now.”
“Don’t remind me.”
“Hey,” Mark said. “What’re we talking about?”
He sat his tray down next to me.
“Oh you know…life, the universe…everything.”
“Very nice. How was everyone’s weekend?”
“Saturday was going so well for me until my brother dragged me to your stupid party.”
“You came?” He looked nervous. “Really?”
“Oh yeah, I came.”
“Oh. Sorry.”
“Yeah. I didn’t really expect the world to end…friend.”
Mark rubbed my back. “Did you have fun?”
“Sure. It was a joyous celebration of life.”
“She danced,” Sophie said. “That has to count for something.”
“Yeah. Dean wouldn’t stop talking about how she ‘danced’.”
I laughed. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Dean now has a little crush, big sister. Thank you for that by the way. I had to hear a whole monologue about your…” Sophie slapped him on the arm.
I pulled down my sunglasses to the tip of my nose. “You can’t be serious.”
“Oh. I am. I so am.”
