"hey, i heard your sister found your loverboy's address," jordana tells me as we walk through the school gates.
"he's not my loverboy...and how do you even know that?"
"how inactive are you on social media? she even went there, painted a heart on his jeep and took pictures of him through his bedroom window. she's getting seriously creepy."
i shrug, taking books from my locker and stuffing them in my bag.
"hey guys. avi, can i talk to you for a second?" miles asks, joining us.
"sure, what is it?" i ask as he drags me away.
"stay away from your 'mr rudie'," miles says with such a serious tone i burst out laughing.
"why?" i ask after i calm down.
"uh my mom knows him. yeah, that's right. and he...was expelled from his old school," he tells me, scratching the back of his neck.
"okay..."
"he has a bad reputation so you should stay away," he says firmly.
"miles, you're acting weird. i stay away from him anyway." i put a hand on his shoulder and he flinches.
"are you sure you're okay?"
i'm really concerned.
i pulled the collar of his shirt to the side to reveal a purple bruise the size of a baseball resting on his shoulder.
"miles! what happened? why didn't you tell me?"
"it's n-nothing. i got it from football. don't worry about it."
"okay then," i reply, returning next to jordana.
i decide to go to the library for the remaining time before school starts and i begin to make my way there alone since miles and jordana didn't want to go.
suddenly, a large hand wraps around my mouth and pulls me into an empty classroom.
i start screaming but the hand muffles them.
i eventually run out of breath and the hand drops.
the person is...mr rudie?
i quickly back up but i feel my back hit the wall. mr rudie approaches me.
great."please don't murder me!" i squeak and shield my eyes as he just laughs.
"why would i want to murder you, my little muffin?" he says the last words lightly and playfully, in such a way it gives me shivers.
"i don't know...maybe because you're rude to me 24/7?! and for absolutely no reason! don't you think it's the teeny-tiniest bit sketchy that you brought me into an empty classroom with a hand over my mouth?"
"true, but that's not it," he states, looking around the room.
"you're n-not gonna give me a reason for why you're acting this way?"
"nope."
"i'm leaving. there's obviously no reason for you bringing me here," i reply, picking up my bag that dropped and starting to walk away from him before he blocks me.
"no you're not. you have to hear me out." i groan.
"fine, what is it?"
"i need you to do me a favour," he leans closer to me and whispers into my ear. he returns to his original position and gives me another one of his intense stares.
wow, his eyes are beautiful. i've never been this close to his face.
wait, what am i saying.
i shake my head and blink at him.
"and what makes you think i'd ever do you a favour?" i ask, crossing my arms over my chest after i recover from his intimidating stare.
"it's about your sister."
it's about leo?
"you have three minutes." i can't believe i just said that.
"okay, so as you obviously know, your sister finds me irresistible and hot like everyone in this school," he starts.
"and you've lost me. i'm not here to listen to you brag about your looks." i attempt to leave again but to be blocked by his arm.
"i'm sorry, please stay. the point is, she's become obsessed with me. she recorded me changing for god's sake." i cringe at that.
"and you want me to...?"
"can you stop cutting me off?"
"sorry," i look down.
"as i was saying, she has a really creepy crush on me and i need your help."
"yeah i really don't know how..." i trail off.
"be my girlfriend," he states and my eyes nearly fall out of their sockets.
he wants me to what?!
"excuse me?"
"fake girlfriend. i meant fake girlfriend." i hear him softly cursing at himself.
"you think this is enough to make her back off?"
"you don't?" i shake my head.
"knowing leo, she wouldn't."
"why do you call her leo?"
"i'll tell you some other day. let's get back to what you were suggesting. i don't think it'll work but i'm willing to give it a try."
"thanks," he smiles.
wow i think that's the first time i've seen him smile. and it must be the most beautiful smile i've ever seen.
"you think so?" he asks and i look at him confused until i realise i said it out loud. i feel myself blushing.
"why me?"
"what do you mean?"
"why choose me to be your fake girlfriend?"
"well, first of all, you're her sister. which makes everything a whole lot better," he smirks and i roll my eyes.
"you don't even know my first name. you just call me muffin."
"i know your first name. heck, i even know your full name. aviana bailey thorne. i just prefer calling you muffin," he winks but it ends up more like a squint. i burst out laughing at that.
"wait, i still don't know your name." gosh i'm blushing again.
"it's shawn. shawn mendes." shawn. it suits him.
"well shawn, what does this fake relationship include?"
"we only have to act in public and you can't tell anyone about this. not even your best friends."
my friends! i suddenly remember what miles told me.
stay away from mr rudie.
i guess it's too late now.
"okay, let's do this." i nod.
"thank you! i owe you." he wraps me in a hug. i awkwardly return the hug.
this guy suddenly changed from being super rude to super...not rude??
and i'm agreeing to be in a fake relationship with him.
i must be turning crazy.
the bell rings and we go to our separate classes.
