"i guess my secret's out," shawn murmurs with a sad smile.

"huh?"

"everyone knows i sing now." after saying that, he turns away and looks out the window of his car.

oh.

"well, i mean, you're definitely talented and talent should be recognised, so how bad could it be?" i ask in an attempt to comfort him.

after a few moments of silence, he replies, "you're right. besides, your sister no longer has anything against me,"

"exactly!"

"i just didn't expect it to blow up like that."

"no one could've expected that," i tell him, rubbing his back reassuringly.

"i guess," he mumbles to himself.

we're driving to the airport where we'll be taking our flight to new york.

"if lia has nothing against you now, does that mean this," i say, gesturing between us, "is over?"

"do you want it to end?" shawn asks, looking up.

"i don't know, you're really nice to talk to and you're a great friend." shawn drops his head at this for some reason.

"what's wrong? did i say something wrong?" i ask.

"no, everything's fine," he says briskly before turning back to look out the window.

just then, i receive a call from leo.

that's weird. i'm the last person she wants to talk to right now.

i figure it must be important, so i accept it.

"vi, it's gran. she's sick!" leo starts frantically.

"what happened? never mind, you can explain later. where are you right now?"

"i've already called an ambulance. they're gonna bring her to the hospital," she informs me.

"okay, i'll be there as soon as i can."

with that, i hang up.

i look up at shawn with worry-filled eyes.

"what's wrong?"

"gran's sick. i'm so sorry, shawn. i don't think i can come on this trip with you after all," i say sadly.

"it's fine, go make sure she's alright. i'll take a detour and drive you to the hospital first. we left for the airport early anyway."

"thank you so much. sorry again that i can't come. i'll make sure to pay you back for all the expenses."

i frantically look through my bag for my wallet with all the negative thoughts in my head.

shawn gently places his hand on top of mine in a comforting gesture.

"muffin, that should be the least of your concerns right now. don't worry about it."

for some reason, his words instantly make me feel better and i find myself calming down.

i rest my head on his shoulder and let out a sigh.

soon enough, we pull up to the hospital.

"this is my stop..." i look sadly at shawn, tears forming in my eyes.

"hey hey, don't cry. your gran will be fine. she's strong. she'll get through this."

i stretch a weak smile across my face.
