He was seated on one of the desks at the side of the classroom, leaving the central space free as a stage. One leg, bent, rested on the desk, while the other dangled slowly. The dozen students in the classroom listened to him while he sang in the most nonchalant way I had ever seen.
Oh, my home is wherever you are
You kill my soul and we are falling apart
His voice was the perfect mix of Luke Pritchard from the Kooks and Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys. I had never heard this indie rock song.
Did he write it?
Oh, my love is in your heart
Yet now... we are so far
His silvery hair with golden highlights, lit by the light coming from the window behind him, shone and swayed with his every movement. A gray turtleneck sweater emphasized his honey-colored eyes. I never would have guessed that the captain of the soccer team had a passion for singing. I stepped forward to better hear the notes Jay was singing.
Alas, it was definitely not my lucky day. I stumbled and I fell forward, opening the door.
"Sarah?!" said Jay, stopping. "What are you doing here?"
My face became redder than Katrina's hair. I could hardly say I was spying on him.
"I was..." I said, looking around at the eyes goggling at me.
Suddenly I realized that I had an excuse - a good one.
"I was waiting for you to finish to put myself forward for the club," I said, lifting my chin.
"You want to be part of the singing club?" asked Jay, incredulously.
Yeah, I couldn't believe it either.
"Certainly" I replied, trying to lift my chin even higher.
After struggling to get down from the desk on which he was seated, a meaty boy with a trumpet in his hand headed toward me.
"We're still looking for two members, so why not," he said, showing his yellowish teeth.
I let out a sigh of relief. He looked like a nice guy and, unlike Amir, wasn't among the top names in the pyramid, which made him more accessible.
"Go to the center of the room and sing a song," he said, pointing at what would become my stage.
Everyone looked at me, intrigued.
"What? S-s-sing?"
"And how did you think you were recruited for a singing club?" he asked, laughing. "All instruments are taken apart from the drums. Or maybe you came to be the drummer?"
"No, no," I said, walking toward the center of the room. Drumming sounded more difficult than singing.
"Sing your best tune."
The truth was that, apart from Happy Birthday at parties, I had never sung in my life.
Once again, I thought of my father and Silver Wings. Mankind had expressed itself through song forever. One of my ancestors had, by virtue of logic, been a singer; I must have a bit of that talent in my DNA.
I closed my eyes again.
This time I did it to imitate people who have a great set of lungs.
But what should I sing?
I couldn't think of any songs.
"We're waiting." I recognized trumpet boy's voice.
I decided to open my mouth and let out the first words that came into to my mind.
