"Hello!"
"Kiki...".
"If you're a girl or a sexy guy, you can leave a message after that annoying noise that sounds like a beep. If you're one of Kiki's wonderful friends you can leave a message. If you're neither sexy nor her friend, call her back when you are."
In other circumstances, that message would have made me smile, but at that moment it made me furious. Although it had nothing to do with the situation, I was angry with Kiki. I needed my only friend right now, and she wasn't there for me.
I headed for school, looking for someone to take it out on. The Elite Party had given rise to an avalanche of unfortunate events that was snowballing second by second. I had to find a way to stop myself from being smashed into tiny pieces.
Like a lightning bolt, I barged into the building where the main classrooms were. In front of one of the lockers, a few feet from the increasingly disturbing pyramid, Meilin was arranging some large textbooks.
Smoke came out of my ears as I thought about what Amir had told me the night of Halloween: "Meilin saw everything." As I approached her I had to hold back a hysterical scream when I saw the face that had caused all my troubles.
"You!" I yelled, making her turn around.
When her small almond eyes met mine, which were wide and full of hatred, she stared as if she'd seen an evil creature.
"W-w-what do you want?" she asked, trying to pull herself together. "I have to go to advanced history class," she continued, adjusting the collar of her blue shirt.
"Don't play dumb. I know everything," I said stiffly, at the mercy of feelings of hatred that I'd never experienced before. "I've had enough of people making fun of me and treating me like something to use and throw away. I'm tired of these games. I don't want to play I saw and I heard. Tell me what you know without leaving anything out because I swear I've had enough of you, your friends and this damn high school!"
She opened her mouth. She certainly hadn't expected me to talk that way. Her surprise fed the flames burning within me like wood.
"I think you must have hit your head," she said with restraint. "I didn't see anything. I don't even know what you're talking about."
"Yes, you do!" I screamed. "Amir told me you saw everything!"
She jumped when she heard Amir's name.
"Look, I have my own problems to deal with after the video that stupid Urban Skull published," she said angrily, slamming the locker door firmly after removing the history book. "The last thing I need if I'm going to get back into the pyramid is being seen talking to someone like you."
I was about to object but she was already walking down the corridor toward the right wing, where the history class was held. She moved her legs quickly, causing the pleats of her dark blue checkered skirt and her long coal-black hair to flutter.
Old Sarah would have let her go, believing her life was destined to be a continual failure. Maybe it was true - my future rejection from Silver Wings and the end of my romance with Jay were the proof - but you can't be a victim of bad luck if you decide to fight it.
I rushed towards her.
Meilin turned, hearing my footsteps, which were louder than usual.
"I told you to leave me alone!" she hissed.
I grabbed her forcefully by the arm just as Dick had done with me that October night, and dragged her into one of the many empty classrooms.
"Have you gone crazy?!" she complained, trying to shake free from my grip. "I always said that you're a nutjob."
