The smoke rose up into the cloudy sky as the last thundering blast from Star’s wand rang out into the night. She heaved breaths, watching as her foe collapsed to the ground, dead in an instant. She lowered her wand and stared out at the sea of bodies, the boiling thoughts of lost lives tearing through her mind like a ravenous beast. She turned to look at Marco, expecting a status update.

“Dan was the only one killed, bullet to the head,” Marco panted out. “Jeff, Alfonzo and Megan are critically injured though.”

“These attacks are getting worse,” Star growled as her eyes watered. “We can't afford to lose any more soldiers. They'll destroy us!”

“We're already destroyed,” Marco said hopelessly. “We'll all end up dying by the end of this… we've already lost four people… twenty if you count the people in the insanity chambers.”

Star sniffled and wiped away her tears…

“We have to get out of here…” she whispered. “We can't go on like this…”

“You can't be serious, Star,” Marco said as his eyes widened. “They'll just catch us again, maybe even put us in even worse cells!”

“We must organize a plan,” Star snapped. “I will not stand for this damned war any longer!”

“Hey… so a few things happened lately that I haven't mentioned to you. I figured I'd help you catch up.

There have been two attacks from what we think is Force-03. Ryan, Peter, Dan and Lynn… They're gone.”

--

“What do you mean they're gone???” Blake exclaimed. “Oh god no… no… they can't be dead… please… Jackie, tell me they just escaped…”

Blake wiped the running eyeliner from his face, hugging his knees as he leaned up against the stone planter…

“...It's no use… of course they're dead… nothing good ever happens… I just wanna wake up and go home…”

--

“I know you knew them well, and it's hard to lose someone in life… I'm sorry I came with bad news... I guess, even though it's mostly a bad thing, the sort of good news is you won't be alone in this room all the time…”

--

“Well, that’s not entirely true,” Blake sighed. “I have you… these weird ghostly things that just stand there and stare at their lockers until they want to speak to me. I'm sorry you can't hear me.”

He frowned sympathetically at Jackie, who sat beside him.

--

“Jeff, Alfonzo and Megan are in the rooms next to you now. They were hurt in an attack that happened on the wall towards the northeast. Megan was shot down from her plane, barely surviving but saved by Brittney… rather unusual of her... Jeff was pushed off of the wall, but luckily, he survived. I think he broke a few bones, but he should be okay. Oh, and Alfonzo… I mean I… I don't even know how he's still alive…”

--

“It's probably faith,” Blake suggested. “I mean, that's all I'm running on right now… heh…”

--

“He was stabbed above the stomach with a sort of longsword that I have never seen before… the wielder twisted the blade while it was still through him. I know because I heard Alfonzo scream, and when I turned to look, I saw it happen…. Ugh, it still makes me feel sick, seeing all the blood that spilled when he pulled it out. Let's not think about that part though… He's a couple doors down from you. I hope he makes it…”

--

Blake said nothing. He just watched her, waiting for her to continue...

--

“I guess I'll tell you some good news…

Oskar says “Hello”, by the way. He's doing well, nothing terrible has happened to him. He misses you a lot though, straying outside a lot, muttering under his breath. I think it's about wanting to get out of here… He came by, right? These flowers? How did he get these… Janna probably snuck out and got them for him, you know how she is.

Speaking of the outdoors, the weather has been nice lately; I went outside the other day and I saw a bird. I haven't seen one in a year or so… I think it was a mourning dove. Beautiful birds, they are. I hear Star likes to summon animals and give them to soldiers that are struggling mentally to help calm them down. I'm glad she's back… back from Mewni… well... Star has a plan of sorts, or at least, she “plans to make a plan”. I don't know what it is, but all I can say is that… y-you know…”

--

Blake gently brushed a tear from Jackie’s eye, taking a deep breath…

“I'm trying to wake up… I really am…”

--

“I hope you wake up for it. Please, Blake…  I-I miss you… We all do…”

--

Blake pulled Jackie into a hug, her misty, glowing aura swirling gently around them. It glowed softly with light like fireflies, the colors dancing like polar lights...

“I-I'm sorry…” he whimpered helplessly. “It’s all m-my fault… I-I probably could've saved those who had died… I miss you all so much…”

--

Jackie sniffled and stroked Blake’s hair.

“I'll talk to you later… I gotta go…”

--

Blake pulled away from Jackie, letting her misty figure stand and run back into the fog, her aura following behind her in a trail. He hesitated before standing up and following her. As he had expected, she stood motionlessly, faded and no longer glowing, her eyes closed as she faced her locker.
