Have you ever felt like your being watched? I have, except I knew I was being watched and I don't know if that makes it any better. You get goose bumps and then you feel the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. I feel this way most nights when walking home but tonight it felt ten times worse, every noise made me flinch. I heard the car behind me slowing down while I walked faster. The window rolled down and I heard some cat calls and then saw the car drive away.
I made it to my apartment complex and walked past some boxes on the stairs, which is no surprise to me, people move in and out of this complex. I looked in the open door across from mine, it was filled with expensive furniture. The smell of weed blew out and I held my nose, I turned around and began unlocking my door when I heard a bump and looked down the stairs to two boys falling down the stairs, they looked around sixteen. I ran down the stairs to make sure they were okay and they were laughing. I mean who laughs after a fall like that?
"Are you okay?" I asked them when I got to the bottom. They both nodded and smiled, and then I noticed how similar they look same hair, blonde hair, tan skin, and height. The only thing that was different was their eyes, one had blue eyes and the other brown.
"Where are your parents?" I asked concerned about two teenagers alone in this part of the city. The blue eyed one stood up, he was a few inches taller than my 5'4, "Don't worry we're not moving in, our brother is." the brown eyed one then said "Like that's any better Willy." he laughed. The blue eyed one rolled his eyes and looked to me "I'm Will and this is Noah." he held out his hand, as did Noah. "I'm Alex." I said as I shook their hand.
"I hate to cut this short but I really must head inside, nice to meet you both." I said and started up the stairs and finally unlocked my door. I saw my mom asleep on the couch with a baby bottle in her hand, I studied her tired face and her curly brown hair. She takes care of my daughter while I'm working, and I couldn't be great full enough. I woke her up and lead her to bed, and grabbed Sophia and closed the bedroom door. I live in a one bedroom apartment with my mother and my daughter, so most of the time I sleep on the couch. I sat down and looked down at Sophia, she had blue eyes and the darkest eyelashes I've ever seen, she was only six months old and she never cried.
I fed her and rocked her slowly, her eyes fell and she was asleep, I put her on the couch while I headed to the kitchen. I looked in the refrigerator and it was empty, so I grabbed an apple and sat on the couch next to Sophia and went through the mail, looking for the bills that needed to be payed versus the ones that could wait. My mom doesn't work because she has epilepsy and most company's won't hire her, I'm a nurse still paying off medical school so we don't have much of an income. When I finished the bills I picked up Sophia and took her to the main office with me to deliver the envelopes. I opened the door and was welcomed by the scent of cinnamon, I put the envelopes in my assigned box and left. I went up the stairs and went inside and looked at the time 11:43. I put Sophia in her crib next to my mom and I headed to the couch and set my alarm for 5:45 and closed my eyes. A tear fell down my cheek as I thought of Sophia's father, he died in action. I thought of the dimple on his left cheek when he smiled, his laugh, his warm arms, Sophia would have loved her father if she met him, he died three months before her birth. I let more tears out, and the tears slowly glued my eyes shut, and I fell asleep.
Will's P.O.V.
"Why are you moving out?" I asked my brother as he was packing boxes in his Jeep Wrangler. "Because I'm tired of dad jumping my shit every time he's home." he replied. " He's never even home, plus your going to have to get a job and stuff." Noah said I nodded in agreement. "Yes I will get a job and stuff, how hard can it be?" my brother chucked. "Look if y'all ever want to come over my door is open but I'm 26 it's time I leave anyway." he closed the door.We all got in the car and sat in silence till we reached the complex, it was small and the grass was brown and the parking lot was filled with cars with tape over windows. "You're moving here?" I asked disgusted. "It's temporary until I'm making bank." he said parking next to a gray mini van. "And how are you going to do that?" Noah said. "Get a job, duh." He said like it was obvious. Noah and I looked at each other and laughed.
While my oblivious brother unlocked the door me and Noah grabbed some boxes and headed up the stairs when Noah tripped me and I took him down the stairs with me. Then some lady came down the stairs asking if we were alright, she was shorter than me and had blonde hair and brown eyes. We introduced ourselves and she walked up the stairs and went in her apartment just as my brother came down the stairs "What's taking y'all so long?" He questioned. Noah answered first "Your neighbor is hot." He said without blinking. I laughed, of course that's all he got. He shook his head grabbed some boxes and took them inside.
As we said our goodbyes back at the house I felt weird. Like I was gonna miss him even though Noah was still with me. It had always been the three of us, and now he's leaving. Noah and I ordered pizza and played some video games, then Noah went to bed. This giant house fell silent and felt twice as big. I went to my room and locked my door took off my shirt and looked at the scars on my wrist. I grabbed the razor and watched the blood drip down the sink, it was an impulsive action. It made me feel better, like I got a high off of it. I took a shower and feel the burn of the hot water on the fresh cuts. My brothers didn't know, and it was going to stay that way. I wrapped myself in a towel and got out of the shower and walked past a photo of my family before my mom passed. Me and my brothers were making silly faces while my mom and my dad were kissing behind us, we looked so normal. Who would have known a few months later mom would be gone? Would we have done something different?
I put some basket ball shorts on and some head phones in and fell asleep.
