"shut up, el," max laughed, wiping the last drops of iced coffee off of her denim jacket, thanking god that it only got onto the jacket and not her new white shirt.

"oh gosh, i'm so sorry!," el laughed, grabbing a tissue, wiping the sides of her friend's neck, where the few drops still lingered. "i really am!," she exclaimed, after meeting max's glare.

"okay, okay!" max said, smiling. she ruffled el's hair, standing up, placing the bag of freshly cooked donuts on the table. "is it all gone?," she asked.

el looked max up and down, catching max's gaze following her own, smiling. "yeah," she said. "wait, just one right there," she murmured, and wiped the side of max's face with her thumb. "there, all gone," she said.

max smiled, slinging her bag over her shoulder and picked up her donuts. "what now, huh?," she smiled.

"let's head home? or see if joyce is still at work, maybe," el suggested. max shrugged, and nodded, looking down the road as they crossed the zebra crossing quickly. "we can watch a movie if we go home," max said, smiling.

"good idea," el chirps, smiling. they link arms and continue walking down the streets, down towards where joyce worked.

"so, how are you liking 'school'?," max asks, smiling. "nancy, jonathan and steve are smart," el says, smiling. "they teach me lots of stuff, like how australia was originally a convict land, or something of the sort," she smiles.

"close enough," max murmurs, ruffling her hair, and jerks her hand quickly away when she hears a familiar voice calling their names.

"el!," will shouts. "max!," he grins, and max bites her lip, turning around. will byers was the only person who knew her secret, probably the only person to ever know.

she feels the blood rush to her face, and wonders back to the time she told him.

"c- can we talk, max?" will asks, softly, as he gently brushes his hand against her arm, watching lucas walk away from the bakery.

"what about?" max raises an eyebrow at will, who purses his lips and leans in towards her right ear. "el, we need to talk about el."

at the mention of el, it made her knees go weak and her heart drop to her stomach, but she gulped and smiled with a lot of quick hesitations, said "sure, will."

soon, will and max sat at the table the pair sat at with lucas, an awkward silence growing between the two. "what, what did you want to talk about el for?" max stutters.

will looks around, stands up, and sits on the opposite side of the table, very close to max. "listen, i'm not going to judge you, promise," he paused for a second, before going on.

"do you like el?"

she freezes, feeling herself sink into an abyss she had been expecting of falling into anytime soon, fear striking her of the very thought of being exposed to someone of herself, rhe side of herself not wanting to hide any longer. a minute passed, and she sat, quietly, deep in her thoughts until will spoke up, placing a hand on her own, looking at the skylight on the ceiling.
