*Jack*
We stood outside. We had just landed after a seven hour flight. Felix stood rigidly across from me. Although he was calm his mind was racing with thoughts. Felix's brain was like a megaphone. Questions randomly, images of what the newbie might look like. And random disasters that could be occurring back home.
"Would you stop thinking so loudly?" I whined at him, "it's hurting my head enough with everyone else's thoughts around that are unfamiliar."
He shuddered slightly being startled out of his thoughts, "sorry Sean."
A bit annoyed, "Jack," I corrected folding my arms angrily.
His eyes flicked at the door and back to me, "Jack," he repeated distractedly. His body still tense.
I only rolled my eyes. He was useless when it came to being calm. It was incredibly annoying. Hope long did it take to talk to someone and come back outside?
I hope he's ok in there. Matt shouldn't have gone in alone Felix thought to himself.
"Oh he's fine. Would you stop being such a Debbie Downer?" I complained shifting from foot to foot bored.
He glared at me, "stop doing that."
I only rolled my eyes. Suddenly Felix jerked to attention hand saluting Matt as he finally walked out the college's front door. He simply waved Felix off as a man walked out behind him. He was taller than me. And a few years older. His mind was like a clogged drain with running water. Constant questions and none leaving. Fear radiated everywhere in his brain. We fell in line with them. Me at the back and Felix at the front. As usual I couldn't hear anything from Matt. The man had bright red hair and soft chocolate brown eyes.
"So you're the new recruit huh?" I asked him. His thoughts began wandering so I tried to bring him back. I said hello.
I kept speaking to him but he was completely out of it. "YO! HELLO? Earth to whatever your name is. Mark right?"
He jumped slightly. Probably confused by me knowing his name. He nodded nonetheless. I apologized and explained why it was so sudden without warning that we came to get him. We chatted back and forth for a bit before boarding the plane. Matt and Felix went to the engine, or cockpit as it was called. That left me and Mark alone in the cabin.
"So your Irish, and an inqusanlar?" He asked me settling into his seat.
"Yep!" I answered cheerily sitting across from him.
"So what's your power?" He continued to shift in his seat trying to get comfortable.
"Oh that's simple, I'm a mind reader. That's how I knew your name," I sat down in my chair crossing my legs and leaning backwards.
"Mind reader? Like you hear everyone's thoughts?" He raised an eyebrow in question.
"Sure can!" I chirped.
So can he hear everything I think? Hmm..... I'll ask him a question. What's your favorite pizza? Mark thought
"My favorite is really any pizza, and yes I can. But I can also block people out if they get especially annoying. The only person I've never been able to hear is Matthew's," I sighed, "nobody knows much about him."
Mark leaned back seemingly processing this information. He was quiet for a bit, at this point I tuned out his mind since it was so loud and crammed with questions. We sat in silence for several minutes.
Mark spoke suddenly, "so what about him? He seems pretty powerful?"
"Yes actually. He's the. . . . I'm not supposed to tell you." I cut myself off before I could tell him too much.
We didn't talk much for the rest of the flight. I felt bad for not being able to tell him. But, he had to be told in time. It wasn't my place to speak anyways. Mark grew bored. Shifting in his seat, picking up magazines, looking out the window. Various other distractions.
Eventually we landed. We were home, back in Tanevale.
"Home sweet home!" I cried as we landed, "time to show you the ropes!"
