Chapter 8

The following days are hot. Sweaty, messy, sticky, hot. I don't know how North Carolina weather usually is but Ashton says it's hardly ever like this. If it was, I highly doubt I'd be staying here for this long.

The weather wasn't the only thing that was getting heated. I've found myself wanting to spend more time with him, to want to fall for him but knowing I shouldn't, to get to know him more, at least. My trust has become a big deal since we left and I don't feel comfortable giving it to anyone but Austin. Ashton is beginning to win me over slowly, using his charm to his advantage. It's not only physical attraction though, even though that's there, it's the fact he and Austin are like brothers and that he has been through a lot like me. We relate, we get eachother. But I don't want to give my trust yet, it's only been a week and I've only shown enough trust to let us continue to stay at his house.

Currently, I sit on a leather chair in the living room. My shirt is soaked and, because I'm wearing shorts today, my legs keep sticking to the leather every time I move my legs. It's rewarded with a sticking sound that sounds more like peeling tape from a box, which sounds just as unappealing as it is.

Ashton and Austin had just gotten back from a trip to the local auto shop where Ashton was getting his old pickup fixed for something new. Austin insisted on going and Ashton quickly agreed after looking to me for confirmation. So, I guess, in some ways, I do trust Ashton. I trust him with Austin, I trust to stay with him. I mean you have to trust people at times, you have to trust people at restaurants that you order from that the food you're getting isn't poison. You have to trust people everywhere, and Ashton is one of those I trust more than most.

"It's not any cooler in here!" Austin rants loudly, bouncing inside and towards me. Ashton follows behind him, smirking slightly. "Why don't we go to the beach or something.."

"Char-" I start. Calling him Charlie doesn't sound right as it is. He could go for it but it's just not natural, he's Austin. Aus.

"No, he's right. Lets go to the beach. A few hours away and there's Myrtle Beach, it's nice. Trust me, you'll love it." Ashton stares at me for a long minute which ends up with me examining my skirt.

"Please, Taylor! It'll be fun and I'll do anything. Please!" Austin begs, collapsing in a heap on the rug at the foot of the chair. I snicker and look back to Ashton. It would be fun to get to know him more and to have a day just to forget for awhile. It's also good to get out of the same place for awhile. Switch it up.

"Yeah, sure, what the heck. It'll be fun," I say, careful not to lose eye contact with him. I can see something wild flicker in his eyes but I keep it to myself, anxious to see it again.

Two hours into the three hour trip and Austin's asleep in the back despite both Ashton and I's loud, semi-toxic belting of lyrics. Honestly, I'd naturally be timid to start singing in front of a guy I met this week but we're literally so comfortable with eachother that I feel like I can sing with him.

"Okay, next song that comes on, name it." He says after Ain't It Fun by Paramore finishes off to the radio announcers voice rambling about a contest.

I squint my eyes, pursing my lips to the side in contemplation. "Mirrors by JT."

As anticipated, as if by some creepily, random force, my prediction comes out right as Mirrors by Justin Timberlake is announced. I open my mouth and gasp, "Oh!"

"Okay, now I'm scared. What am I thinking?" He glances slightly at me from the corner of his eye.

I narrow my gaze and pretend to think. I'm actually sitting cross-legged right now, my seatbelt twisted so I can half-face him. "Mmm, cats?"
