A Dress She Wore

A dress she wore to cover her scars.

To hide her pain.

To find fault in the stars.

People called her names and as rumors spread around,

She knew she had to leave her home town.

A dress she wore to start a new life.

To forget the old one.

To hold on and to strife.

Sadly the same thing will have to be true.

She only said the words "it's me or you."

As people became meaner and pain harder to hide,

She knew she would never be able to guide,

Herself from hatred, herself from pain.

Those were the only things keeping her sane.

If only she knew how cruel people really were.

Then maybe she could understand why I just stood there.

Just looking at her with eyes open wide,

I would be lying if I said I ever tried.

I thought it would blow over and when it didn't,

I knew then and there, how bad it had actually hit.

You were wrecked, broken in two.

All because you thought they could ever love you.

And just because I stood there watching,

Doesn't mean your story wasn't touching.

A dress she wore in a bathtub that night,

And with her decision she brought a knife.

Then right there I knew what she was going to do.

But I said nothing just because I was afraid of you.

You had real emotion, it was seen by all,

Even as you ran out of the dance hall.

That night was my fault, I know that much is true.

All because I told you what I knew.

A dress she wore in a velvet coffin deep.

I forced this on her all because we played to keep.

A friendship in this case is always something to trade,

Well, that's what I thought when my decision was made.

A dress she wore buried beneath the ground.

Why the hell did she have to leave her home town?

It's all my fault, it's clear to see,

But I don't understand why it's still bothering me.

It never really occurred to me before,

But then it hit me when I walked through the church doors.

A dress she wore now resting in peace.

With this letter in her hands,

Now safely kept for keeps.
