We have two choices: either take the elevator or the escalator. I knew that the first was far away while the second was the opposite. The only problem, those undead got in between us and the escalator.
"Come on." Rykel grabbed my hand, going in the opposite direction of the escalator. "The elevator is the safest route and also take this." He added, letting go and giving me one of the bloodied bats he whacked the zombies with.
A moment of hesistation passed before I firmly had a grip. Then, we ran without making a sound. Blood chilling screams, shouts of help and mercy still echoed from different places in the mall.
"Don't let it get to your head, Mika." He noticed me slowing down. "If you stop or even slow down, they'll get you."
I gave him an assuring nod that I won't slow down, not a bit. Rykel's pace slowly changed to a run as we got closer to the elevator. My tired legs had a hard time catching. To be honest, the elevator looked like the only place blood had not touched.
The surrounding stalls said the exact opposite. Blood scattered all over. Corpses hung over the counters of some stalls. Some flinched, even moved. I felt my blood go cold as I saw raise their heads and reach out for us.
About a moment passed, we stood in front of the elevator. Seeing that it wasn't there, we looked up and saw it three floors abobe us. Despite the tension, Rykel gently pressed the up button that would lead straight to the FoodAlley.
I heard footsteps behind. I spun around and saw zombies shuffling to us, hands reaching out. My hand reached for Rykel's sleeve, tugging it violently to gain his attention.
"Shit." He muttered, holding up the bat like a professional player would. He walked up right in front, his back facing towards me. "Go wait at the elevator." He ordered and I knew he wasn't going to tell it twice.
My back planted itself against the sliding doors of the elevator. Rykel preapared himself, his head turning left and right to see which lifeless corpse would lunge at him.
"Rykel! To your left." I shouted. Rykel quickly pivoted to the said direction. He placed the nearly dented weapon behind his neck. He waited a second, then he swung in a wide arc. I could hear the faint sound of the wind as the bat made contact.
I heard a single bone snap, loud enough for me to hear. The unfortunate corpse head quickly cracked violently to the head. Its body fell to the side with a thud.
Another one came walking from Rykel's blindspot. But before I could warn him of it, he swung his bat again to the right. He sure scored a solid hit with another neck snapping and another body falling down permanently.
Rykel backed up a few steps to avoid getting centered. I heard a ring from behind, the elevator arrived. I called onto him before he got another hit.
The metal sliding doors opened. It seemed so slow for me that the moment it opened, I squeezed myself in. Rykel followed suit. Once inside. He fastly tapped the close button. Fortunately, the elevator's doors closed without delay.
Relief came to both of us. My legs gave out again and I sat on the floor. Rykel, however, leaned against the wall to my right. He looked at me, laughing a bit.
"What a hit!" He laughed but not to the extent I considered crazy. My eyes only gave him a blank stare. The situation changed all in one motion. Although I knew Rykel would often give light punches, he wouldn't hurt anyone at all.
"How are you doing all this?" My voice sounded hoarse. Rykel's laughter immediately died down. His eyes looked down, head hung low. "How are you acting all of this doesn't make a difference?" I waved my hand around.
