To anyone who had a bad 2017:
Here's how you can have a better 2018.Think back to 2017 and remember when you felt happy. Keep the memories somewhere you can access easily, not just in your head. Look at photos, write in a notebook, write a note on your phone.
Identify the things that made you happy at those times. Where were you? What were you doing? What music were you listening to? Were you eating anything?
Carry those things on into 2018. Revisit those places. Continue those hobbies. Make a playlist of your favourite music. Eat plenty of your favourite food.
Identify the people that made you happy in 2017. Not the ones that made you happy for a while and then left. Thinking of them might hurt. Think of the ones who were there for you in January 2017 and are still there for you in January 2018. And think of the people you have met along the way, who you're not completely close to but the thought of becoming better friends with them makes you happy.
Keep those people in your life this year. Keep those people by your side and make sure you stay by theirs. Give to them the love and care they give to you, and spend lots of time with them. Become better friends with the good people you met, and maybe rekindle some friendships that have faded.
Breathe, and know you're going to be okay. It's not about having a fresh start. It's not about "new year, new me". It's about remembering the good things in your life, and carrying them with you into the new year.
I wish you well.
