Chapter One: Something Unexpected

It is a dark and stormy night in Gotham.

When is it not, a masked induvidual thinks, as she stands perched on top of one of the tallest structures in the city.

But no matter how bad it gets up there, it doesn't even compare to contiuous typhoon that threatens to consume her on the inside. The worst storm on Earth, even, can't hold a match to the emotionally charged storm that is Tigris's internal struggle.

It's been more than a couple of months since he died.

While some don't believe it as fact, she knows the truth. Wally is never coming back. For he is dead. It took her nearly a week to get that through her thick skull.

Over those past months, a lot has changed for Artemis Crock.

For one, she no longer goes by Artemis; that was his partner. Instead, she retook the mantle of Tigris. It suits her. For, now, not all of her actions are heroic. Just the other night, she busted a couple of thugs breaking into a jewlery store. She beat them nearly half to death.

That is why she is on this roof tonight. She is here to talk to an old friend. One that has also distanced himself from Team, lately.

The sound of a door opening knocks her out of her thoughts. She glances behind herself to see who or what just stepped onto the roof. She swings around and takes a defensive stance. She relaxes when she recognizes the person that is joining her.

"Looks like someone is glad to see me," the man states sarcastically, observing her defensive stance heavily.

"Feeling's mutual," Tigris replies gruffly, still lost in thought, slightly. "How's it been, Joe?"

She steps closer to her long-time friend, Joseph Domingo. He is clad in his usual attire: a large trench coat and combat boots, with a grey button up and jeans. His two pistols are held firmly in their holsters on his hips. The classic look for his persona, Marine X.

"Pretty good," He responds charmingly. "Considering all that has happened in the past year or so. I'm sorry I wasn't there."

Artemis looks away and down at the gravel that covers this roof. She knows what he is referring to.

The funeral.

Wally's funeral.

"Besides the real show was back East, the day before," Joe says jokingly, referring the large League backed ceremony in Central City.

Artemis quietly chuckles as she mentions, "Yeah. But either way, we still carried an empty box."

"Yeah," Joe chimes. "But the man in Keystone? He showed more heroics than even Superman that fateful day in March."

"That's why you called me here, right?" Tigris asks. "You said you had something from that day? That the League needs to look at?"

Joe just smirks. "Always been straight to the point, haven't you, Crock?"

Tigris smirks back in response, "That's just how I am."

Still smirking, Joe pulls out a small electronic device. It looks like some sort of computer.

"This here," he starts, "is the Motherbox that Kid used during the mission. It contains all of the data and intel that his squad gathered while on Apokolips. It includes detailed plans of Thier invasion strategy, as well as some information about the other worlds The Enemy is targetting."

Artemis takes it and looks it over. As she does this, she can't help but think of one question: "Why me?"

"Huh?"
