Shadow-hopping was first discovered in 1800, by a man named John Freek in Central Africa. In itself, it is the ability to transport oneself into the world of the shadows, called the Shadow Zone, and return to Earth. No one truly knows how he made such a crucial discovery in the history of man-kind, but it is speculated that he had discovered evidence of such an ability in western Europe. John Freek was the first Shadower.
The Shadow-Zone is the realm of the shadows. It is the place where shadows reside when there is no one left to see them i.e, when you are sleeping or when its dark out. The Shadow-Zone is smaller than the Earth, so travelling there is generally faster than on our planet, and this is the main use of the Shadow-Zone by humans. However, more advanced Shadowers have used it to store items, though this takes years of practice.
To navigate the Shadow-Zone, a Shadower develops an ability akin to night vision. It allows them to see colour in the pitch black world of the shadows. This is normally the first ability newcomers learn, though it is learnt through instinct. It involves images of Earth constantly entering the person's mind while they look around the Shadow-Zone, allowing them to "see" what it looks like.
Shadows seem to be a somewhat sentient species, bound by some kind of obligation to work on earth. It seems that when they are in their homeworld, they despise humans. Every Shadower sent to explore there at night has never returned. Some still hope to find a way to communicate with these creatures, but at the time of this entry it has never been done. It would be impossible to get them to stand by or even work with us humans. But if such a thing were to be done, it would take someone of great Shadowing prowess, hopefully someone with good intentions.
We can only hope
