Chapter Five

We pulled out the front of my house and Zayn looked at me.

“I can come in with you, if you like.” I shrugged and sat there in silence for a moment. I wasn’t entirely sure whether it was a good idea or not.

“I think I’ll just go in on my own.” I sighed. “I’ll call you when I’d done?” I asked him and he forced a smile and nodded.

“Good luck Steph, you’ll be fine.” He said kissing my forehead as I clambered out of the car towards my front door. I almost felt as if I should knock considering I technically didn’t live here anymore. I decided against it though and threw the door open before heading upstairs and pulling out my suitcases and shoving my clothes in. I didn’t bother to fold them. Next was my guitar, I packed it neatly away in its case. I looked around the room at the little bits and pieces laying around. I put the remaining suitcase on my bed, and with one quick sweep everything left fell into it. I didn’t really have much, I had a lot of clothes but I decided to leave everything that didn’t fit or that I didn’t like laying on the floor. I pulled out my phone, texting Zayn telling him I was ready. He replied to tell me he was less than five minutes away. I sat down on my bed. Looking around my room I could see all the memories flooding back. When Nathan and I used to play when we were little, where Sandy had spilled nail polish all over the carpet and blamed me. I wiped the tears from my eyes and started off downstairs. As I was taking the first two suitcases out the front door, Zayn had pulled up. He took them from me and I marched back upstairs to get my guitar and last two suitcases.

When I got into my room mum was sitting on my bed, she looked up at me as I entered. She stood up from her position on the bed.

“I can’t believe you, you know. What did I ever do to deserve you? You’re an inconsiderate waste of space” She spat.

“The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree I guess.” I yelled at her. Her eyes widened she stepped closer to me, I felt her hand make contact with my cheek. It burned and I felt tears start to well up in my eyes. Sandy came running in and stood stunned at the sight, I looked at her before pushing past my mother, slinging my guitar case over my shoulder and dragging the last of my belongings down the stairs.

“Stay out of our lives.” My mother screamed, I didn’t look back, I marched out the door with my things and threw them into Zayn’s car, ignoring his offers to help me. I shut the boot and got into the front, I just wanted to leave. I waited for Zayn to start the car, but he didn’t. He sat staring at my face, his cold hand touched my cheek and I started to cry.

“Did she hit you Steph?” He asked me trying to calm me down. I just stared ahead blankly and nodded. I didn’t want to talk about it and he picked up on this. Zayn was good at knowing when to shut up and when to speak, I was so thankful that I had him to turn to, even though I hadn’t known the boys long, I knew that somehow they were going to help me a lot over the next year.
