Chapter 1:
It must have been a trick of the light; Alfie scrutinized at the girl he caught a glimpse of. He tried to find that girl again, bouncing on the balls of his feet to peer through the swarm of people on the dance floor. He didn't even get a good look at her. He only saw her smile in his general direction when she spun around, but...she was so familiar that he just had a feeling that it was someone he knew.
He shifted from side to side, no luck in finding the girl. His thick brows pinched in disappointment, his lips in a frown. Maybe he was just seeing things, or maybe he didn't know the person. He couldn't think straight, what with the music and the bright lights.
The music was horribly loud, the bass hammering into his skull with every beat. He only came here because he loved the meals served by the bar and was hungry after the long drive from University. Once he finished his meal, he paid for it and stood up from his seat. He took a step towards the exit door that led to the parking lot exit when suddenly the girl that caught his attention earlier was in his path.
She stumbled gracelessly out of the mashing, sweaty bodies. He wondered how she could have walked in those high heels, but then again after a year in college where every party he went to had girls traipse all night in dangerously high heels, he knew that girls weren't as fragile as they looked, especially when it came to shoes. Her arm glistened under the colorful lights from the thin sheen of sweat. Her long, curly, dark hair hid her face from his view, but he knew that it was her.
She was dressed in a satin navy blue dress that was precariously short. It had long, fitted sleeves that had a glittery pattern on them. The bodice was quite loose, but it still accentuated the graceful curves of her chest and hips. It ended barely mid thigh, softly swaying with every movement.
While she looked great, he could tell from her body language that she didn't feel confident wearing the dress. She fidgeted, trying to make it longer by tugging it down. She didn't notice, however, that pulling down the dress meant that it made the material press into her chest, outlining the deep curve between her breasts. Alfie frowned at the lecherous looks the men around gave the ignorant girl.
He saw the girl bump into a guy who was busy drinking alone against the wall. He looked at her in surprise before a disgusting smirk slid onto his face and his hands traveled to the small of her back, keeping her in place. The brunette tilted her head up to meet his gaze, and instantly pressed a hand between their colliding bodies to put some space between them.
"C'mon baby, it's not far from—what the hell's your problem?" The guy's hardened gaze landed on Alfie when he placed his hand on the girl's shoulder. A well-practiced cool and threatening look appeared on Alfie's face.
"Get your hands off my girlfriend." He tells him in a low, intimidating voice, causing the man's hardened gaze to break apart. He apologizes, both to him and the girl before walking away. Alfie was glad that he had some sense in him. He wasn't about to start a fight on his first day back in town.
"Thank you," The girl says in a soft voice, her head lowered. Alfie looked at her from the corner of his eyes. "Someone should have been with you. It's not unlikely that a guy would—shit."
"What?" The girl tilted her head upwards, her eyes boldly meeting his with a confused gaze. Sudden anger flashed through Alfie.
"What are you doing here?" He demands furiously, giving the girl an unpleasant surprise. Shock crossed her features before annoyance settled on her face. Her lips pursed, brows furrowed at the tone of his voice. "Excuse me?"
"God, Mindy. Aren't you still underage? What are you doing here?" He couldn't believe it. The last time he saw her was during the summer before he left for college. The last time he talked to her was a little bit over four years ago. And God how much she has changed.
