Chapter 3:
Orange is such a beautiful color, Mindy decides when she opened her eyes.
Her room was stained with the bright color, making everything look red or orange. She shut her eyes, sucking a pained breath at the sudden light in her eyes. Why were her curtains open again? She was one to keep the curtains drawn, even when it was morning.
Blinking a few times to get used to the light, her gaze drifted to her bed. She didn't even get to move to her last night. She fell asleep staring at the stars by her alcove window
She was so dazed by the night sky. The stars, which had been hiding for the past week, were twinkling brightly across the vast darkness, accompanying the toenail moon. They lit up the night sky, and there was not one cloud present to obscure the exhilarating view.
Mindy loved learning about astronomy and the moons of the other planets or about neighboring galaxies and the like. She was a nerd when it came to that, and she was proud to admit it. But other than learning all about astronomy, she loved to look up at the stars.
When she was a child, her estranged father sent her a book about constellations. All the famous and not-so-famous ones were all found in that book, and Mindy was ecstatic about her birthday present, even if she was an oddball who didn't make a big deal about her birthday. She memorized every constellation in that book and although she can't name all of them now, since it was a very long time ago, all the constellations she saw were familiar. All thanks to the book.
Normally, she'd be up on the rooftop, her usual stargazing spot, but last night was surprisingly chilly for a summer night so instead she peered through her windows. The hurricane that was said to be passing by for a few days must have caused the cold weather.
Mindy looked out at the window to shut her eyes and hiss in pain once more. The light was harsh to her eyes, making them water involuntarily. She opened the window and expertly climbed up to the roof, heaving herself up with her arms. To say that it wasn't a feat would be a lie—she had to be extra careful doing so or else she's going to end up broken on the grass, and she had no other leverage other than her window pane—but throughout the years of sneaking up there had given her muscles and the strength to do so, so now it didn't take much to pull herself up.
Swinging one leg to the roof, she pushed her torso up with her arms and then swung her other leg up, lying on her back. Mindy knew it was dangerous, but luckily she was never clumsy on the roof. She very much welcomed being clumsy on the ground If it meant not being clumsy on the roof. She then wouldn't have to worry about failing to her death with just one wrong footing.
When she positioned herself away from the edge, she let out a low whistle. There was nothing better than watching the night sky, but that didn't mean she didn't love watching the sun come up.
It was another one of those moments that Mindy wished time would pause. Above her head, the sky was still slightly dark, stars winking at her in the fading darkness. As her gaze approached the horizon, the dark indigo void warmed up to the morning orange, painting the sky like a canvas with the color of first light. She smiled and enjoyed the view. Soon, the sky was its famous blue, with only splotches of red that reflected from the feathery clouds.
Now that the show was over, Mindy carefully made her way back into the safety of her room. Well, she wasn't going to be sleeping anytime soon.
It was the first time in a few days that she woke up early. She hasn't been sleeping early, since she only started a TV series after that horrific morning at Sebastian's house. Yesterday afternoon, she has just finished the latest season and so her schedule that night was very much vacant. So she slept early.
