I've had some pretty bad birthdays, but packing my whole life up into a car and moving is a shit birthday. "Scarlet we need to get moving." My mom yells up the stairs as I grab a arm load of bags going downstairs to meet with my mom and sister Leah. We put all the bags and boxes in front of the door before
we start to load up the car moving swiftly as we go to not be saw as "out of place" by mom's standards. We have moved 5 times in the past year and today is my birthday it's also the day my dad killed Cynthia a year ago. We go strap our concealed carries onto our thighs and slip into the car. We get on the road headed for Mexico City which is about 500 miles away. For the past two months I've been swapping out English in my studies for Spanish and also having to write everything in Spanish and that's including math. Our next stop is Houston, Texas.

One hour later we make it pass the Mississippi border, and into Louisiana, we soon stop for a bathroom break and something to eat.

We grab some snacks from the gas station and get back on the road we have 6 1/2 long hours left to Texas. I'm going to stay with family in Texas for a couple of days to lay low. Mom thinks if we make the full drive we'd be more likely to be shot at. When we lived in Alabama the Browns had connections with a gang called the white snakes they shot at me every time I left the house. We were there for two months and only mom could leave, but every time she did I had to have my Strap and the doors locked. We finally made and break for it and ended up leaving at 1 in the morning. Mom doesn't have me enrolled in school but refuses to let me go without a education because of what my dad did.

My mom is teaching me all she knows since she was a teacher up until last year when we first had to move, I teach myself a lot of things by simply doing research on subjects that are interesting to me.

Mom puts me out of my thoughts by saying "Scarlet, Leah try to get some sleep we still have a few more hours to go." "But it's still light out mama." Leah whines "I know Leah, but we were up early this morning and up late last night packing, I think you need some sleep." Mom tells her still focused on the road, Leah gives up and put her head up against the window, closing her eyes, I soon do the same after I look out my window for a little longer.
3 hours later.
I wake up and we are now just crossing the Texas line. "Good night time honey", my mom says with a yawn. "I'm about to stop off for the night at one of my friends house get your sister and be sure to have your gun pulled, strap her into her bullet proof vest and stay low until we get inside", she says very sternly. I jump out of the car gun held low and my mom covering my back. I strapped Leah into her bullet proof jacket and put her regular jacket on her before we left out with Mom following close behind, and that's when I heard the first shot fired. I run to the front door and sit my little sister on the front steps. "Stay right here ok don't move", I tell my now sobbing seven year old sister. I hug her and run back to my mom putting my silencer on in the process. I see the guy shooting at us which is about ten yards away in the near by bush. "Mom you ok",I yell over to her seeing her holding her good arm. " Yeah he just grased my arm is all", she says wincing. I fire a round off in the bush and hear a Yelp I see the assassin limp off to a van parked by the curb and with that he was gone. I go back to Leah who is crying and in a small voice she asks me "scarley are you and mommy ok". "Yeah baby we're ok", I say kissing her forehead. We get inside and I take off my undershirt knowing we have to stop mom's bleeding but a hospital visit is to risky. I rip off a peice of my shirt and take a gauze given to me by mom's friend and tie it tight around mom's arm. "Ok mom go to sleep I'll take first watch", I say demanding she go lay down. "Ok go tuck your sister in bed for me", she asks me weakly. "Yeah I got her here take this", I say handing her a extra strength Tylenol and a bottle of water. She goes off into the guest bedroom and lays down. I go over to Leah who is playing with the spare baby dolls that Jenna ,my mom's friend, had from her kids who are now grown. "Ok monkey time for bed", I say sweetly to her. "Okay scarley I'm coming but can they come to", she says holding up the dolls. "I don't know you'll have ask Jenna", I say pointing to Jenna who is sitting at the coffee table. She gets up and walks over to Jenna who is smoking a cigarette and asks , " Mrs. Jenna can they please sleep with me", with those those big brown eyes. "Of course Baby doll you can have em if you want" She says looking at her sweetly. "Really Mrs. Jenna thank you, thank you, thank you!", she says jumping up and down and hugging Jenna who is laughing. "Ok babe go to sleep and dreams some good dreams for me ok", she say tucking a strand of Leah's hair behind her ear. When we left the house we only grabbed what we needed and Leah's toys weren't on the list so she only has two Barbie's and a teddy. She really misses home and her preschool friends. I tuck her in and before I get up she stops me and looks at me with those beautiful brown eyes and says, "Will you sing to me scarley", with a puppy dog pout on her face. "Of course love, what do want me to sing", I say sitting back down. "I will love you till your 70", she says with a twinkle in her eyes. " Ok thinking out loud let me think", I say before I start singing

I finishing singing and she's fast asleep. I walk over to Jenna who is sitting on the other couch and start read a book from the coffee table with my gun sitting on my leg. "Your a strong woman scarlett", she says pulling me from my book. I look up from my book and she continues saying, " I saw how calm you where today, if my got shot I would be losing my mind and you just snapped into action and seeing you with Leah is so sweet, its like your already grown at your age, your mom told me what happened and for you to be so calm is a little scary", she says with a giggle at the end. "I've been through alot over the past year and I guess I've gotten used to the constant chance of being shot, I am just ready for the times it happens, i freak out on the inside but I have to stay calm for them", I say throwing my head in the direction of Leah. "Your a good kid get some sleep I got it, I'll wake you when I get tired", she says sincerely. "I can't leave the house ungaurded but thank you", I say shaking my head. "Hon I was a marine for 20 years fought in two wars and was shot 7 times. I got it and my PTSD keeps me up anyway your safe here", she says with a smile on her face. "Ok wake me up if anything happens though", I say laying back and closing my eyes. "Will do kiddo" she says pulling a pistol from underneath the table and lighting another cigarette. That's all I saw before I drifting off to sleep.
