y/n's pov

i answered the door to see one of the guys from the royal palace.

"hello, we are having the royal ceremony for the 7 princes. you will have to dress up and go to the palace in 3 days time for the 7 princes. they will have to pick one of the ladies and will marry her."

i nodded as he handed me the scroll and went off to scurry to the other houses. they always do this when the princes are old enough, but this was my first year actually doing this.

i sighed in stress as i went over to the kitchen to cook kimchi stew for my mom. she has been sick for a while, but we don't know what's wrong. the doctor is coming today, so we could figure out what happened. if we can cure it, i don't know we can afford for the medicine.

i poured the soup into a bowl and put some rice on a plate. i grabbed a napkin and spoon then headed upstairs to her room to see her sitting up but grabbing her head in pain.

"you should eat, then lay back down," i say in worry. "i'll give you some pain-killers so your migraine doesn't hurt."

she nods as she smiles. i grab the table for the bed and put her soup and stuff on it.

"the doctor should be here soon."

"annyeonghaseyo...y/n-imnida," i say as i bow and get out of the way so he could enter.

"annyeonghaseyo. vernon-imnida."

"oh, my eomma is upstairs."

i closed the door and lead him upstairs to my mom's room.

he checked up on her and did whatever he needed to do. i was sitting next to her while looking at the wall. i don't know what's wrong with her, but hopefully it isn't something bad.

i saw him take blood from her.

"i will come back tomorrow for now. i need to check her blood through a microscope to see what happened to her, but for now, let her rest and take some pain-killers for her migraine," he says with a smile.

holy shit i never noticed how good looking he was??

"okay, i will lead you out."

"kamsahamnida," he says.

i go back upstairs to see my mom laying down, but not sleeping.

"you should go to sleep soon, the doctor said."

i walk over to her and sit on the side of the bed. i really hope she's okay and not something serious.

"i heard downstairs, the person from the palace? you don't have to go if you don't want to..." she says.

"okay."

the next day

"i'm so sorry...but your mom has cancer," he says with a sincere sad expression.

it felt like everything in the world has stopped. my hands started sweating as i started shaking as well. my heart pounded so hard and so slow, it's like it was about to stop. i couldn't even cry. i didn't want to cry, but i couldn't if i even wanted to.

"but, she is still in stage 2. there is a cure for it, but she will have to go to the hospital. there are machines there that will help her fight the cancer, but it will take a lot of money."

"that's fine...i'll find a way. thank you for your concern, doctor."

he smiled and bowed. "no problem. you may call me vernon, i don't mind."

vernon handed me his card then left shortly.

i went up the stairs and smiled a little at my mom who was sitting up.

"what did the doctor say?"

i looked down at my shoes as my heart raced.

"he said that you'd have to go to the hospital...but i don't think we have the money."

i then raised my head to look at her.

"i'm going to the palace."
