The men were immediately snapped out of their distracted stupor and looked at her confused. She was no longer all sweet and smiley. She gave them a hard look that was slightly amused and challenging. She studied all of them closely. All of them looked dishevelled and beaten a few slightly bruised but nothing too serious. Most were leaning against the cement banister behind them with wrists bound behind them. One man was luckily enough to have his wrists in front of himself which was no doubt more comfortable. His legs were splayed out and he was splayed out and he was slouched. He looked like he had given up and was leaning his head against the banister behind him. She paid him no mind and raised her eyebrow questioningly waiting for an answer at the others.
Crane raised an eyebrow as he waited for the other men to reply. When they didn't she sighed and rolled her eyes. She opened her mouth to talk when her eyes fell onto the man who was still high on gas. He moaned and shook. Concern filled her eyes and she rushed over to him disregarding the other men, kneeling down next to him. He looked around and gasped for air. His head swayed around and he was covered in sweat, choking a little and coughing. He didn't seem to be able to see her.
She leaned over him and spoke.
"Are you okay?"
Her voice seemed caring but authoritive to get his attention. He heard her voice and searched for it. She took a hold of both sides of his face and shushed him when he started to splutter out a sentence.
"Shh. Shh...it's ok...it'll be ok. Just breath ok? Breath."
His shoulders shuddered as he did what looked like a nod, but was more of a jerk of the head. He slowed his breathing but it was still laboured.
She looked him in the eyes which seemed to calm him down. She pushed his hair out of his eyes and stroked the side of his face to soothe him.
"Ok. Now I need to know what your on."
She looked up at the group of men who had been staring at the two. She gave them all a stern look. They were snapped out of their stupor again. How did she know what was wrong with him so quickly? One of them hesitantly spoke up.
"Uh. He took some uh 'fear'."
She nodded and looked out in thought then looked back at them.
"Do any of you have the antidote?"
The man all shook their head as Crane gave her an interested and slightly puzzled look. How did she know about his fear serum? And why was she so relaxed? Didn't she have the slightest idea how much danger she could be in?
Her eyes scanned the group of men all of them shook their heads. Her eyes looked at the boy next to Crane who shrugged and finally on Crane. She stared directly into his bright blue eyes. The sweat that had slicked his hair had dried over the past few minutes in the cool night breeze blowing through the parking garage. She took a moment to study his features, for a second he thought she was checking him out when he realized she was just taking in everything. His mask lay next to his feet.
He grinned inwardly knowing she would put it together. Would she be afraid? Would she call the police that were already coming? He waited patiently to see. Her eyes widened for a second in recognition and her mouth opened. To gasp, he guessed. Instead she spoke.
"So you're the guy with the sack over his head and the gas?"
The men looked at him nervously. No one talked to him that bluntly. Not because they respected him or feared his anger. More so they feared his serums. They all looked back and forth between the girl and Crane who stared at each other intently.
Jonathon didn't know how to react. Clearly that's an understatement, he thought. She obviously didn't grasp the concept of what she just said. He wasn't just the 'guy with the sack over his head and the gas' he was THE 'guy with the sack over his head and the gas'. But something told him that starting a large spiel at the moment was a bad idea, and besides, he didn't really feel up to any bravado at the moment.
