Truth of Courtney

Ryan and Kyle moved furniture around as the rest of us grabbed snacks, drinks, pillows, blankets, etc. After everything was moved we all gathered in a circle in the middle of the living room. Everyone turned and looked at me.

"What's everyone lookin at me for? It was Kyle’s idea." We all turned to him.

"Thanks Maddie."

"You're welcome." I said in an obnoxious tone.

"Okay so rules: Rule 1: If you pick truth you cannot avoid the question and must truthfully answer it. Don't even think about lying because everyone in this room is close enough to know dirt on someone else in here." We all laughed. "Rule 2: If you are dared to do something you have to do it no matter the dare. So think wisely before you choose truth or dare." He said in a game show voice. We all laughed.

"So how do we know who goes first?" I asked.

"Um, let's see." He said. He thought for a minute.

"Come on Kyle, we don't have all night!" Ryan said.

'I got it! Okay, Maddie do you have a deck of cards?"

"Yes." I got up and walked into the kitchen. I walked to as my family called it ‘the junk cabinet’ and opened it. ‘Jeez someone really needs to clean this thing out.’ I thought to myself. I moved things around until I found a deck of cards. I walked back to the living room and handed the deck of cards to Kyle. He looked at them.

"Smiley faces? I thought we weren't in middle school anymore." He said.

"You wanna go look through the junk cabinet to find one without smiley faces?"

"No."

"Then shut up and tell us how to play." Everyone laughed. Kyle shuffled the cards a few times and spread them out across the floor.

"Everyone pick a card." He said. Everyone picked a card. "Now flip them over for everyone to see." Everyone flipped their card over. We all looked around at everyone's card. "Okay so the person with the lowest card which is... Jane goes first. Jane you pick a person and ask them truth or dare."

"Alright." She said.

"Wait one more rule." Kyle said. We all groaned. "What goes on tonight stays between the 12 of us and no one else. Agreed?"

"Agreed." Everyone said at once.

You know that feeling you get in the pit of your stomach? The feeling when you know something is going to go wrong but you don't know what? I got that feeling as soon as we all said agreed. ‘It's truth or dare what could go wrong?’ I thought to myself. So I just shoved the feeling out and listened as we began to play truth or dare.

"Okay, so do I just pick anyone Kyle?"

"Yes." He said.

"Okay. Hmm let's see.” She said as she looked around the room. "Okay I have one. Courtney."

"Oh great." Courtney said. We all laughed.

"Truth or Dare?"

She thought for a minute. "Truth."

You would think that people would take it easy on each other the first couple rounds of truth or dare right? No. That's not how it went at all. The power that Kyle gave Jane that night was too much. Especially as to what just happened between Jane and Courtney. Jane being the person that she is came head on running at Courtney and this is when disaster began.

"I was hoping you would pick that." Jane said. She thought for a minute. "Okay I have one." She said. "Is it true that you're pregnant?" Everyone gasped. We had all heard it around school but Courtney and I aren't best friend’s forever secret sharing friends. We only hang out every now and again. Morgan is much closer to Courtney than me.

Courtney turned bright red. "I'm sorry. Could you repeat the question?"

"Do you really want me to do that, Courtney?" Jane said in an obnoxious tone.

"No." She said. She was stuttering over her words and looking at the floor.

"We can't understand you Courtney can you speak up please?"

Jane can be such a bitch. But then again I wasn't fully aware of what had happened yet. Courtney was starting to get pissed and I could see it. I looked down at the ground knowing there was about to be a fight. Courtney looked up from the ground.

"Yes I am pregnant. You know what the funny thing about it is though, Jane?"

"What's that?" She said.

"Your boyfriend." Jane turned around to look at him. He had the most shocked look on his face. He was white bright white. "Yes, your oh so loving boyfriend Danny? He's the father of my baby."

I closed my eyes. This is going to get bad real quick. I'm pretty sure everyone in that room except Courtney, Jane, and Danny were looking at the floor wishing they weren't here to experience this fight.

"I'm sorry could you repeat that?" Jane asked.

"I don't really think you need me to." Courtney said. Jane turned around and looked at Danny.

"Babe, I'm so sorry. Please let me explain." He said.

"Explain what? You've been sleeping with one of my friends?! How could you?! “ Jane screamed.

"Oh, let's not start with the drama fest Jane. You knew it. Or you wouldn't have asked me if I was pregnant. You've known since before I was pregnant that Danny and I were sleeping together. You just thought that I was a whore who slept around! Sorry to disappoint you but Danny is the only guy I've ever slept with and now were having a baby. Sorry you had to find out this way Danny."

"How long have you known?" Danny asked.

"Two days." She replied.

"Okay, we can talk about your happy baby bump later! Why Danny? Why couldn't you just come to me and tell me we were over?"

"No offence or anything but you can get a little too heated." Wrong answer I thought to myself. I looked up and I don't think I've ever seen a human being turn so red.

"A little to heated? You think I can get a little too heated? So your bright idea is to go sleep with one of my friends? Are you stupid?!" Just say yes. I thought to myself. “Instead of coming to me to say hey sorry but were just not going to work out you decide in that small head of yours that I'm just going to whore it out with one of Jane's friends?!"

"Alright look. I am not a whore. I've slept with one guy my whole life! That might not be a long span of time bit it's definitely a lot less than you have slept with Jane!" Ouch. I thought.

"Okay stop it!" Danny said.” Jane, I'm sorry that I cheated on you. It was stupid, I'm stupid ( good choice of words. I thought) but I can't be with you anymore."

"Good. I hope you and miss baby bump over there have a happy life together. Just know that you don't know what you’re missing out on."

"He doesn't need to know. He has me and a baby." Courtney said.

"Congratulations Courtney! Do mommy and daddy know that there going to have to pay for a grand baby here in a few months? Do they know that you were too stupid to get on the pill or he was too stupid to wrap it up? Do you know the statistics for a teen mom to be successful in life? So yeah you can have him Courtney. You and your baby can have him. While you’re changing diapers for the rest of your high school life I'll be out having a good time with someone else. Hopefully someone that loves me. Someone who really loves me!" Jane said.

"You're pregnant?" Charlie said in a quiet voice. I bit my lip. Oh God. Charlie we all forgot about Charlie. Charlie the sweetest guy in the world. His girlfriend is pregnant and it's not his.

"Looks like you have someone to tend to." Jane said. She turned around and sat back down.

"Charlie I'm so sorry."

"You’re sorry? No I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I couldn't find someone who could be true to me." Courtney began to cry.

"Charlie." He cut her off.

"Don't." He said. "I don't think I can’t take any excuses right now."
