Ethan's POV
"Hello, Mr. Dolan" the doctor says as he walks passed the curtain in his white lab coat. He had a clipboard in his hand and a pen in the other. "Looks like you've got quite the issue there" he says.
I wince at the surging pain through my knuckles and stifle a fake laugh, "yeah. It looks worse than it feels" i lie. It hurt like hell. It looked like it too, with the red and purple tint.
But it's my own fault.
"Well good, because it looks broken" he says cautiously. My heart stammers in my chest and then beats quickly, heavy pounding was heard from within my chest.
"Let me see here" he puts the clipboard down beside me on the bed as i sit, grabbing my wrist. I flinch as his fingers graze over my knuckles. "Does that hurt" he asks.
I nod and hiss in pain when he moves my fingers, one by one.
"We're gonna get you in for a scan, see what's going on. And then i will be back to let you know, okay?" He asks, tapping my shoulder lightly. I nod again and glance to my side, where Y/n sat quietly on the chair. My mom was here, too. She was filling out my paperwork and sitting in the waiting room.
Y/n looked like a mess. She was crying, i could tell. Tears fell silently in the car and she wiped them away like i would never know. But i did.
"Stop crying" i say softly. Her red eyes looked up to me as she wiped her tears away again.
"I can't." Her legs were shaking profusely. She was just as nervous about the results as i was. "If you broke your hand you could-"
"I know." I accepted the fate as soon as i hit the hard metal. She just made me so mad. So pissed that i decided to hurt myself out of spite.
"I'm sorry" she apologizes, taking the blame for my actions. She didn't slam a locker into my hand. I did it to myself.
I shake my head and look into her swolen eyes, "don't be." The curtain swings back, her father emerging.
"What the hell happened" he says in a worried tone.
Y/n's face was shocked. She didn't know i had texted him that we were going to the hospital. "Ethan" he says directly, his voice now quivering with accusational anger.
"Doc thinks i broke it" i tell him slowly.
He looks at his daughter, straining to find any words. "How did this happen" he asks. Her eyes were sorrowful and guilty, while mine were pleading for her to tell a lie.
She inhales a deep breath, "Dad... i know you said no distractions" she starts off.
My heart was thumping as she spoke. "But, i really like Ethan." I felt my jaw slack in disbelief as she said this. To her father.
The man who wouldn't let anything distract me for seventeen years. "Y/n" he says in a discerning tone.
"I really, really like him. But then i thought about how pissed off you'd be if you ever found out" she keeps letting the truth roll off her tongue. It was hard to watch.
"You're damn right i'm pissed off" he raises his voice at her, pointing his finger. As if it were her fault. "What, did you bresk his hand because he didn't like you back? I told you he had boxing in his future, not you" he says.
I stood up from the bed, stepping in front of Fred. "I punched a locker in the locker room because Y/n told me we could never work." His angered features softened, "i wanted us to work. But she was so worried about your opinion that she broke it off."
Damn, the truth is cruel.
"So you put your future in danger? For a girl?"
I scoff, rolling my eyes. "Not just any girl, Fred. Your daughter." My words were asserting and his eyes were widened with surprise. "The one who deserves so much, but gets so little. No disrespect, Fred, but she isn't the one to blame here" i tell him.
He looked aggravated. Pissed. Yet, he seemed to understand. I saw the glint in his eyes.
He glanced at Y/n, walking to her with his arms out wide. She stands carefully, hugging her father.
"You are so much like your mother" he states. "So brave, falling for a boxer. Someone who knows what they want" he breaks the embrace and cradles her face in his hands, wiping her tears. "You're a go-getter and i love you, sweetheart."
The speech was sweet.
"Knock, Knock" the doctor interrupts. Fred turns to look at him and places his hands on his hips, "we're ready for you now" he tells me.
I sigh and head out behind him. My mind was too wracked with thoughts to even focus on what he was saying.
Your POV
Ethan followed the doctor out as he explained what the scan would be like.
Your Dad turned back around, the past loving moment has passed. "You or boxing" he says randomly.
"What" you ask, your brows furrowing.
His arms cross over his chest and his assertiveness resurfaces. "He can't have both, Y/n" he tells you. You felt your heart slump.
You knew boxing was Ethan's life. You were just a girl he barely had something with for a couple weeks. "Dad, that's not fair" you detest, scoffing at his cruel ultimatum.
"Life is cruel, Y/n" he counteracts, making no sense. He was the one making life cruel.
"What about what you just said about mom?" You ask, tears surfacing quickly. You two rarely talked about her. "You said i was brave."
He shakes his head, disappointment radiating off of him like steam off hot water. "Your mother was my distraction from boxing" he says. "It ruined my entire career."
You stand still. There was nothing to say except for what he was about to, "i know he'll choose you if he had the choice."
You didn't see a problem in that. You thought being happy would make your dad happy. But you thought wrong. "That's why i'm not giving him one."
His cold remark made your body shiver, "i'll see you at home."
The curtain flowed behind him as he pushed it aside furiously. You couldn't believe what he had just decided for you. Your loneliness is somehow worth Ethan's career to your father.
You knew it would've been tough to be together, but that was something you were willing to take a chance on until this morning. Now, in the cold hospital, your heart was trambled. Bleeding freely inside your chest, and you had no way of fixing it.
Not even a doctor could stitch it up the way it used to be.
You had to let Ethan go, for good.
The tears were streaking endlessly now, soaking your reddened cheeks.
You sat in the chair, your head in your hands. If anyone passed the room and saw you like this, they would assume the worst of your loved one. It was sort of right, except you were losing Ethan in a different way than one might expect in a hospital.
Your head was cradled in your hands as you sobbed quietly, hoping Ethan would take a long time.
But that wasn't going to happen apparently.
The screeching sound of the metal rings to hold up the curtain rang through the room and Ethan came through. He had a smile until he saw you. "Hey, hey" he says, rubbing your back soothingly with his good hand. "What's wrong" he asks.
You look up at him, wet trails down your cheeks. "We can't be together, Ethan."
You didn't know it, but that was the breaking point for Ethan. As soon as you stood to leave him in that hospital room, his heart broke. Much like yours.
The crushing sound of your footsteps walking away made him plummet to a downward spiral... but you didn't know that for a while.
Not until New Year's night...
