While my father didn't recognize the underlying message in the man's statement, I definitely did so.
"Well! I'm d-definitely glad you have a t-translator, because we d-don't!" my father says with a nervous laugh.
The man's stupid smirk stays plastered on his face as he tilts his head and responds,
"Is that so? But you do have a translator..."
Oh no...he better not...
I stare at him threateningly, pleading him with my eyes to not tell. He looks at me long and hard, becoming amused with my stare.
This damn boy...
He turns his eyes away from me and once again at my father,
"Well I must be confused then," he says with a smile.
Pointing, "This is my father, chief of the Kenotyceks, our tribe. Among us stand many of our strong men and women. My father comes here today wishing to make a few statements."
He lied... he's the son of the chief...
I should be angry, but then again, I had lied as well. I come to notice how my father is with wide eyes staring at the natives; since most in the colony never see natives, they are often shocked by their appearance. I give my father I slight nudge.
Waking up from his trance, he gives another nervous laugh and faces the natives,
"O-oh well y-yes, go on-n."
The chief's eyes never make eye contact with any of our people as he spoke, he looks above our heads. Radiating off him I sense ignorance and power. I had an eerie feeling about this man, and Grandfather had always taught me to trust my instinct.
After every line the Chief spoke, his son translated.
"As Chief of these lands, I shall make the rules."
Continuing, "These are our lands, not yours. You have inhabited this place without knowing it; you have lived here for less than a decade while we have been here for hundreds of years. So once again, this is our land. Also, do not think your actions have been unnoticed; we have seen you struggle with the environment, food, shelter, and so on. So therefore, we are here to help, but of course for something in return."
The chief's words had father and the rest of the council a little on edge. Although feeling this way, my father was strong in his own way: he would do anything to help his colony.
Father calmly responds, "And what shall that be young man?"
"We seek your weapons. They are unknown to us, but we have witnessed their impact."
I could see the gears moving in father's head as he digested what the young man had said.
Slowly he says, "And in return?"
"We will teach you how to plant crops successfully without them dying so soon. We will help show you where most fish are and where most animals live so you can increase your supplies of meat. The rate at which your consuming your food, you won't survive here more than a year; even you know that."
Father just stood in shock. The poor man's problems had been spilled out in front of not only him, but a large part of the colony.
Clearing his throat while looking down, "I understand young man. You have yourself a deal."
The boy steps forward with his hand out, "The only way this deal can be broken is if one of us hurts the other, understood?"
My father meets the young man's eyes and steps forward to shake his hand, "Understood."
The young man's eyes now switch to me. Without breaking his stare, he yells out in his native tongue,
"The deal has been made father. We can return to our lands."
The natives all turn around to follow their chief back home, but only one of them stays behind...
"I believe I didn't catch your daughter's name?" the young man asks.
Oh no...
I quickly try to grab father and prevent him from saying anything more, but the words are spoken out of his mouth before I can reach him.
"Oh! This is Clarissa!"
Well shit...
He tilts his head and smirks that stupid smirk of his.
Extending his hand, "Nice to meet you Clarissa."
I stare at him, my eyes blazing with a fire of anger. How dare he act so calmly after everything his tribe did to the others natives. And now he was threatening us! Bah! I won't allow any such sort of thing.
I step forward ignoring his extended hand and say,
"Wena." - Go away.
His eyes turn dark and I walk away feeling a pair of eyes burning into my back.
~ I know this is short and bad, sorry, I tried my best >.<
I have no excuse as to why I haven't updated. I'm truly truly sorry :( I've been so busy with exams and focused my free time on other things. To make it up to you guys, I'll try my very best to update in 2 weeks. THANK YOU for the people who commented such nice words, it truly makes my day c:
Also, just so you all know, the tribe name (Kenotyceks) is not a "real" tribe. I know my translations are Cherokee, but I don't want to identify the tribe as Cherokee because their actions and history can't be compared to those of my story. Cause remember, this is just a story. This is not who the Cherokee were or acted like. So I just wanted to clarify that. Thx again for your continuing support and I apologize once again for not updating so soon. ~
