Chapter One
Y/N - Your Name
"Y/N?" Startled, I shift in my chair, pairing my eyes back with Gregg's beautiful golden amber ones. You'd think if I were so in love I'd never be able to retract my eyes from those swirls of purity but ever since nine o'clock this morning my mind has been on one thing only. "You seem distracted..."
"I'm sorry. What were you saying?" I ask innocently, resting my chin on the top of my hands as I focus on only Gregg across the table. I feel awful, agreeing to go out to dinner with him when I'm not in any state to be socialising.
"Nevermind," he giggles, taking a bite of his food whilst he gazes at me so lovingly. How could he possibly like me? I'm just distracted, workaholic Y/N who never has time for him. "What's on your mind?" There he goes again, effortlessly speaking these incredible words.
"You noticed?" I chuckle silently, sipping from my glass and falling back in my chair hopelessly.
"I love you, how could I not?" I grin, a scarlet blush climbing my cheeks like ivy.
"I didn't really know how to tell you." He sits up and uncomfortably clears his throat, confusion blotched over his face as he attempts to keep a sustainable smile.
"What is it?"
"Well, the radio want to interview this group of guys because they're becoming so popular. They asked me to do it."
"That's great, what's so wrong with that?" He smiles supportively, reaching for my hands across the table but that's not it.
"They don't live here..." I sigh. "They live in South Korea, I have to go there to interview them."
"You're worried I'll be mad?" He breathes with a faint smile. "I'm happy for you, how long will you be there?"
"A month." His hands fall from my hands, suddenly feeling isolated without his cosily warm touch, a puppy abandoned.
"Oh."
"I'm sorry." His face is dull, devasted but then like a light switch his frown turns upside down. Suddenly, he's grinning brightly, so bright you'd think he'd got given a million pounds for nothing.
"Why am I being sad?" He bounces, swooping my hands back into his energetically. "This is an amazing opportunity for you, let's celebrate." He calls over a waitress with messed brown hair piled into a bun on top of her head, a fake smile painted over her internally downturned lips. "Can we have a bottle of champagne?"
As ecstatic that I was that he was happy for me, one thing baffled me, he didn't even question why I'd be away for a month for simply an interview...
"Wait—he didn't even wonder?" Harper asks confused, a small giggle laced in with her words. "Isn't he a lawyer?"
"Yep." I roll my eyes, finishing my (alcoholic drink of your choice).
"What do you think?" She smiles, a compassionate hand rested on my shoulder. I look at her buzzing green eyes and perfectly straightened black hair, she always looked so beautiful.
"Either he wasn't paying attention, ironically like me, or he's up to something."
"Perfect Gregg, up to something? Nah." She chuckles, finishing her drink too and dragging me out to the dance floor.
"No!" I protest, pulling a depressingly dispiriting face but that doesn't phase her intentions. "I don't want to dance."
"Too bad." She cuts me off abruptly, swaying her hips in sync with the music whilst she forces my arms to do a half decent movement. Harper always knew how to break an awkwardly dejected mood, whether it be dancing or one of her famous pep talks. But, it worked as much as I hated to say it. Soon, a song or two later I find my arms more willingly doing her outrageous moves. Despite it most likely being the drinks I'd consumed, Gregg was the last thing floating in my mind and that made me the happiest in the room.
