ORIGINALITY

This is very important! If you make a character that's a carbon copy of an already existing character, you're taking away the original character from the story and creating a boring story for your readers.

Here's a big thing: if your OC is the sibling or cousin or something of an original character, you shouldn't make them steal everything from their sibling.

I don't mean that it's wrong to make your character the relative of a canon one, even though it's very overused!

EXAMPLE:

Ashley Martin is Lydia Martin's twin sister. They have been inseparable since birth, and have been unable to differentiate each other from the other since the beginning.

They both have strawberry blonde hair, pretty eyes, and impeccable fashion taste.

In fact, the only thing that separates them is the fact that Stiles Stilinski has had a crush on Ashley since she was in third grade, much to her boyfriend Jackson's annoyance.

Get it? Why make an OC that steals people's lines, crushes and plot lines when you can have one that make their own lines, has their own crushes and can change the plot line.

The epitome of a good OC is one that can divert the canon events, whom can change it so the story isn't exactly like the show.

Originality is the key.
