I sat in the park reading when my phone went off. I opened the text message from JJ to see that we had a new case and apparently it was a bad one. I got into my car and put on Thalia's necklace slipping it underneath my dress shirt. I go to the BAU within minutes heading straight to the conference room.
Gideon had left shortly after Thalia's death and an old well known retired agent replaced him, Agent Rossi. I grabbed a file from the pile and sat down. "We are going to Florida. There has been a series of killings where families were savagely murdered in their home using weapons of opportunity. In all cases there were two parents and one child. The killer's picture however was taken by accident when the child in the last murder took a picture of herself while standing by the backyard window which has led police to believe that the man is local and stocks his victims before killing them."
I listened to the others as they spoke about their opinions but all I could think about was Thalia. It had been two years since her death but every moment of my day was spent missing her. "Spence any thoughts?" I looked up at Hotch who gave me a worried look. "It's clear that he stocks his victim which means he has a vehicle if he wants to go unnoticed and possibly a record if he can commit a crime with this much brutality. Not to mention he is most likely uneducated." I said acting as if nothing was wrong. "Alright well then everyone his timeline is speeding up. We have three days to find this man before he strikes again. Let's wrap this up quickly." Hodge said leaving as we followed.
I got on the plane and could barely focus as the others discussed the case. When the plane landed Hotch pulled me aside. "Reid what's wrong? You've never been this distracted before." I sighed and looked away. "It's her birthday in four days. Her thirtieth birthday." I said softly lowering my head. "Then let's finish this so we can go home to her." Hodge said gently giving my shoulder a squeeze.
"Alright so what do we now. Let's review." I said as we sat down in the police HQ's conference building after a few days of investigating. "He's a psychopath clearly who uses a specific rouse to get into these houses due to the fact that there is no forced entry. Not to mention he chooses families that remind him of a family he most likely lost." Morgan said slightly surprised. "Well all four murders were in this area...." I said drawing on the map and biting the end of the pen. "I think this man probably lost his family due to divorce due to the amount of brutality used towards the wives while the kids were drugged and the fathers throats were slit." I said before dialing Garcia.
"Hey Garcia. Could you find all the men who recently were forced into a divorce and who lost their families recently after." Emily raised an eyebrow at me in curiosity. "Grieving can drive people to do crazy things." I said looking away as I pressed my hand to my chest feeling the cool metal of her necklace against my chest.
"Yes there are twenty three." Garcia said. "Remove anyway who had any drinking problems or drug problems." I said looking at the map. "You're down to five." "Who lives in the area?" "Only one. Chris Laten, 28 and recently lost his family in a car accident. And if that isn't good enough he was reported to have a parking ticket a street down from the second family's home. " I nodded.
"He worked for Nesca which all four families used as their service provider. The families had spoken to him they just didn't know it." Emily said nodded as she continued to flip through the file. "He also has a history like you said Morgan. He was in for five years prior to getting married for theift." JJ said reading over Emily's shoulder. "We got him." I said firmly. "Guys....he lost his family a month before the killings started. Which means he's devolving and quickly. We need to stop him now." Rossi said firmly nodding.
We suited up and headed over to his house. "FBI! Please open up!" Hodge called before they kicked the door down and went in. We spread out. I went upstairs and found no one there but I turned and felt pain shoot through my temple as I hit the ground. "You are FBI! What are you doing here?" A male voice screamed in my ear. "You are weak!" I turned on my back and kicked the man in the leg causing him to drop to his knees. I then tackled him to the ground. We rolled around until he was on top of me raising the crow bar to hit me. Suddenly the a hand grabbed the end of the crow bar and Chris was thrown off of me. I looked up to see Morgan cuffing Chris while Rossi helped me up.
"You did really well on this case Reid." I nodded and grabbed my bag as we headed onto the plane. "You now we all miss her Reid." I turned to face Morgan. "You lost a teammate and a sister. I lost my life. That's not the same thing." I said walking onto the plane and sitting down.
I started to read when Hotch handed me a package. "Thalia told me when she joined that if anything were to happen to her and you closed off to give you this." JJ said softly standing behind Hotch. They both left and I set it aside before I continued reading. Late that night I opened the package to find an mp3 player. I put the head phones on and started to listen to the music play.
It was classical music for a few minutes then I heard her voice. "Spencer? I know I'm probably dead if you're listening to this and you are probably cutting yourself off from the rest of the team. Spencer I love you and I know you love me so please do us both a favour and move on. I know it sounds harsh and cold but I know that you need to find closure and you can find that with your team. Our family. I made this for you so you never forget the happy memories. The laughs, the smiles and the times we had together. I love you Spencer Reid and I know that you will become an incredible person because you surround yourself with love."
That's when her voice filled my head. Her sweet songs played from Vienna by Billy Joel, to Broken Ones byJaqulin Lee. I felt tears roll down my cheeks as I looked at my sleeping teammates and smiled. Thalia is alive and well. She lives on through us.
