Second Part - bit of angst (ish), booze sets the tongues free in Grantchester.

At the end of his service, Sidney declined all the churchgoers' questions and rushed out for Y/N who was leaving slowly, hoping Sidney would come and reach out for her. It was probably not the best way to behave and especially for a canon but Sidney had to, a much stronger force pushed him.

"I did not think you were the kind of person to wake up this early to attend the mass. We don't see that much of young people around here", said Sidney in a numb way. He was being akward but thought that a compliment could enable him to have Y/N's favours.

"Frankly, I don't go to Church very often", replied Y/N by chuckling.

"Did Grantchester make you change your mind?"

"I-I just wanted to see what was going on... and erm, you did great. Well, I suppose! People were quite concentrated..." Gosh, she thought! You have before you a handsome man and you just go and talk about the people? Y/N craved to talk, she needed more time with Sidney.

Sidney laughed. "That is a major achievement with them. Were you? Concentrated?"

"If you want me to repeat the Exodus, I can tell you straight that I would not be able to. Lots of things going on and when a young and attractive vicar says them, it only makes it harder..." Good, now, you just go and hit on him. In a church.

The two of them left the holy building as Sidney looked at Y/N's cheeks covering themselves with the colour of blooming berries.

"Please, let me offer you a pint. Or coffee. Or anything really", begged Sidney. It sounded desperate but he needed Y/N to accept. For his sake and sanity.

"Asked like that, no one could say no", replied Y/N, a large smile that made her eyes shine brighter that they already did.

.....

"Do you trust me?"

"Should I?"

"What a question, of course not!"

"Then I do trust you but keep in mind that I don't bear the booze and I become quickly a mess"

"I can't wait to see that!", Sidney said with a smirk. Y/N and him were sitting at his favourite table in the local pub.

Y/N was quite surprised to see that a priest could go for alcohol right after talking about sins and redemption for two hours. But she happened to enjoy it. Was that a sin to find the local man of faith so damn attractive?

"George, two glasses of your best brandy!", inquired Sidney, turning his head to the bartender to turn it back to Y/N. "You'll see!", he kept on saying with a forced wink. Being a companion of crime is the purest sin.

A batch of syrupy beverage later, Y/N felt quite tipsy and thought it was just about time to talk about serious matters.

"And did you wake up one day telling yourself: 'Good, I've got the looks to be an actor but I'll just go with a lonely life talking about how Cain killed his brother dear and how Abraham nearly killed his own son'?" By now, every word she muttered was foreign to her brain and slipped through her lips carelessly.

Sidney smiled at her. It was clear that he knew how to bear alcohol and she did not but having her harmless and without any censor was hilarious. "Pretty much. After the war, I just thought that mankind was lost. If brothers could be such cruel beasts with their own brothers, we were heading towards a gigantic wall. This is how I reconnected with religion and faith. It sorted me out. Whether I put myself down and dug a bullet in my head", Y/N looked at him with anger at what the world had made of Sidney "whether I read the Bible and found a way. This is the path I chose. I'm still young but I've seen things that only faith perceived me to appreciate. But it's late and you are drunk. I should take you home"

And so they did. They walked in a lovely afternoon for a few meters until they got to Y/N's frontdoor. "You must think that I'm a fool, now. You've been telling me your life while I was getting more and more drunk. But you must know that I always remember conversations I have with friends. I thank you for speaking that honestly and I'm truly sorry if I did anything that harmed you, Sidney"

"Don't. It was good talking to you. Next time, it will be your turn I guess. Y/N, I know it is quite tough to be accepted in hamlets like this one but you can count on me, the door will always be open"

"Thank you", replied Y/N. Some seconds later, her mouth hit Sidney's cheek. "Thank you".
