High School Gems

First Day

Amethyst's POV 

It's 7 AM, I roll out of bed, it smells like cigarettes, I'm not surprised because I live in a sketchy apartment with my mom but she doesn't smoke. I get dressed, I just wear some black ripped jeans, a white tank top and some combat boots. I've given up caring about what I look like. I walk out of my room and into the kitchen. Mom's gone. She must've gone to work early. I decide to call her because she said she'd drive me to school. She doesn't pick up. "Shit" I think. I'm going to be late. I hate when my mom lies about things like this. My dad isn't around, well he is but i see him only a few times a month. I don't know him very well but it's fine. I feel my phone vibrate, It's pearl calling.

"Hi" I say

"Hi, are you coming it's 7:30 school's in a half an hour" She says.

"I know, I'm going to be late my mom said she would drive me but she left already so i have to take the bus" 

"I'm sorry" she says sympathetically.

"It's fine, really. See you in a bit" 

I hang up and put on my jean jacket, it's not that cold out but cold enough for a jean jacket. I walk outside, lock the door, and walk to the bus stop, it's only like 3 minutes away. I get on the bus. It's pretty full so I just stand by the door. I stand there for 10 minutes until I get to the stop by Crystal Academy. That's the name yet it's a public school with no uniform. Makes no sense to me. I have Math with Peridot first period, I get in and I'm surprisingly just on time. I run inside and get into Math just in time. I see Peridot, there's a free spot next to her. "Score" I think to myself. "Yo" I say. "Hello, you're late" she replies. I shake my head "not late. Almost late" I correct her. "Howcome" she looks puzzled. "Eh my mom was supposed to drop me off but she forgot or just didn't want to" I say rubbing the back of my neck. "But it's okay" I add. "Oh, I'm sorry" She says. "pfff don't worry about it, seriously, it's fine I'm used to it" I say brushing it off as nothing. It bothers me but why would anyone else care? "Oh, okay" Peridot says. The period goes by really slow, like Really slow, I don't understand what's happening so I zone out. The bell rings, finally. Second period, I go to Spanish, I have it with none of my friends which is fine but makes it less exciting. Spanish finishes and I go to chemistry, chemistry finishes and the bell rings for lunch. I go to my newly assigned locker and grab my water bottle and my lunch. I bring a lunch from home because my mom won't give me money and I don't have a job. I go to the lunchroom and sit down. No one's at our usual table yet but me. I see Pearl coming "Hey, P" I say, she waves "Hi Ame-" I look over to see pearl on the ground, she tripped and fell face first onto the tile floor of the cafeteria, no ones helping her. "Shit" I say quietly. I get up and quickly go over to Pearl, she's crying I'm honestly not surprised Pearl cries a lot. "Hey" I say reaching out my hand, she looks over at me and her nose is bleeding. I grab her arm and help her up. "You okay?" I ask. "I-I" I don't know if shes in shock or what but she can't say anything. I grab a few napkins from the area next to the cash register in the cafeteria line and walk pearl to where I'm sitting. We sit down and I hand her the napkins, "here" I say, "thanks" she replies in between sobs. Garnet, Lapis, and Rose come sit down. "Oh my what happened?" Rose asks. "Pearl tripped and fell now her nose is bleeding" I say. "I-I'm fine" Pearl says. "I know Pearl, it's just a nose bleed from bashing your face into the floor" I say, semi laughing. I don't mean to not sound sympathetic but I have a reputation. "Oh, that's not good" Rose says. "Wheres Peridot?" I ask. "Computer graphics stuff, I don't know" Lapis says. Peridot is super smart her mom and dad work in very technological businesses. "Garnet you're quiet" Rose says. "I guess, hard day" Garnet shrugs. "huh?" I say. "my moms are fighting don't worry about it" she says . "Oh, sorry." I say. Garnet gets all worried when Ruby and Sapphire fight because she was adopted, she worries they wont love her anymore and will abandon her. "Don't worry about it, it's just a fight. It's  not like they're going to abandon you or disown you orrr leave you forever" Lapis says casually. Bad move on her part because Garnet gets sensitive about that. Only that. Garnet clears her throat and I see a small tear stream down her cheek from under her sunglasses, she wears sunglasses inside because she's super sensitive to light. "G?" I say looking up at her. "Um... You good?" I ask, she stays quiet. "Shit, shit sorry Garnet I can be really blunt" Lapis says. "It's fine" Garnet says strictly but calmly, wiping the single tear away. "It's okay Garnet" Rose whispers to her but I'm sitting right next to Rose so I can hear. Garnet nods. The rest of lunch was pretty quiet.

Pearls POV

Lunch is over and my nose still hurts a lot but like Amethyst said I just tripped and fell, It's no big deal. I go to my next 2 classes then wait outside of school for Amethyst, we take the bus together. "Hey P" she says. "Hi" I reply. "You okay? Or is your nose still messed up?" It's nice Amethyst is genuinely concerned I know she pretends not to care for her reputation. "It's fine" "that's good, want to come over?" She asks, I've never been to Amethyst's house before mostly because her mom's always home and angry. "Really? Is your mom home?" I ask, "Nah shes at work" she says. "Oh okay, sure." I say. We walk to the bus stop and we only have to wait a few minutes for the bus to come. We get on the bus and get off at this stop I've never heard of and we walk into this sketchy area. "Come on  Pearl, let's go" Amethyst said. I was sort of frozen, I didn't know Amethyst lived in a place like this. We walk along and walk up to this sketchy building, it's 4 stories high, a red brick color, and sketchy looking, I can't explain it. We walk into the  entrance and I instantly smell smoke, like from cigarettes. I cough. "Are you good? It's just smoke calm down" Amethyst says. "Yeah" I say. Amethyst unlocks the door and we walk inside of the hallway and we walk upstairs to her apartment, she unlocks the door and we go inside. The inside looks sort of dirty but it's not too bad. "This is where you live?" I ask. "Yeah I know it's shitty but my mom doesn't care to clean and I'm busy with school. Plus it's just a shitty place" she says. She sounds upset saying it. "Are you... Okay with that?" I ask. "Not really but I can't do anything about it" she shrugs. "Oh" I say. We talk and do some homework I hear a buzz. "I think that's your phone" I say. "Oh, yeah" Amethyst says "It's my mom she'll be home soon you should go, I'll take you home." Amethyst can be really sweet. "Okay" I say. We leave her building, walk to the bus stop and get on the bus, we sit down because there's hardly anyone inside. Amethyst has been looking out the window for a while "hey, you okay?" I ask. "Yeah I just feel like you shouldn't have to leave my house because my dumb ass mom is a jerk." She says annoyed. "Oh, I'm sorry, is it hard for you... You know, at home" I ask, carefully though it can be a sensitive subject for Amethyst. "Yeah, it's rough" Amethyst says, her eyes look glazed over like she could cry at any moment. "I'm sorry" I say putting my hand on her shoulder. "It's okay, I'm used to it" she shrugs, we get to the stop by my house and I have to get off. "This is my stop" we both get off. "I should walk home now, the bus doesn't come for me for another 15 minutes and I can walk home in a half hour" Amethyst says. "Are you sure?" I say. "Yeah, I'll see ya tomorrow, P" she says and she walks away.
