Beep. Beep. Beep. I awoke in my room, in my bed. I was wondering how I had gotten there. Had I dreamt the entire thing? I paused, and realized that I was able to see. It must have been real. Ping! My eyes drifted over to my window. Something flew up and smacked against it as another Ping! and echoed its way through my room. I jumped up from my bed and headed for the window. I opened it and stuck my head out. "Hey Evelyn!" Ethelios shouted up to me. "Shh!" I hushed down to him, thinking that my action was rude and reminded me of my less than kind words the other night. Nina was right.
"Oh sorry! Can I come up?" he questioned a bit quieter. "Umm..." I wondered, "Actually I think my parents would have a heart attack, I'll come down instead okay?" "Alright," he said sounding sad. "Evelyn, who are you talking to?" My mom's voice interrupted. I quickly shut my window and leaped into my bed. "What are you talking about?" I whispered, trying to sound groggy. The door creaked open and my mom stuck her head in. She was looking confused. "I thought I heard you talking to someone, I guess I'm hearing things. Oh and I made you breakfast." she told me. "Thank you mom, I'll be right down." I promised. She smiled quickly and left.
Soon as I heard my mother on the staircase I sprung up from my bed and started rummaging through my drawers for clothes. I was trying to find an outfit that I could afford to get ruined. I had found: a pair of jeans that were splattered with multicoloured paint splotches, a t-shirt ripped at the bottom and a sweater with holes in the sleeves. After I had put on the mismatched outfit I headed down the stairs and grabbed some breakfast (enough for two) and put the like foods in baggies. I was halfway out the backdoor when my mother commented on my outfit. "Evelyn, what are you wearing and where are you going?" She asked. "I uh... decided to go on a hike, and I didn't want my good clothes to get ruined so I wore this. I also decided that I was going to eat my breakfast out there too." I lied. "Have fun and be careful!" she yelled at me, although I was already out the door.
"Where are you?" I whispered, trying to make it look like I was singing, just in case my mom was watching. "In the woods," I heard Ethelios say, but it was so quiet that it could have been the wind. I made my way, quickly, to the trees, and as soon as I could no longer see the house I began searching. "Hey, where are you hiding? I brought you breakfast." I said. "Mmm..." Ethelios responded, as he popped out of a bush.
"Let me guess," he said, putting his index finger to his chin and his nose in the air. I couldn't help but smile. "Is it French toast with a bit of maple syrup and scrambled eggs?" He assumed. I looked at the little baggies. He was right, surprisingly. Well, I had not been hiding the baggies in the first place. "I promise I didn't look," Ethelios said, as if he could read my mind. "It doesn't really matter," I said, just as my stomach growled. "Let's eat!"
Ethelios patted the ground beside him, and I felt the butterflies in my stomach start up all over again. My feet guided me carefully to the patch of grass "appointed" to me. Soon enough I was sitting a few inches away from Ethelios and was placing the food on the napkins that I so cleverly thought of bringing. Ethelios was concentrating on me, then the food back and forth. "Help, yourself," I told him. He stared deeply into my eyes, and I forgot what I had said and what I was going to say. Without breaking his fixed gaze he replied, "I think it best if you take what you need first. I have quite a big appetite." "Alright," was all I could manage to say. I was already head over heels for Ethelios, even though we had just met.
Ethelios turned his head and I was left staring blankly at the side of his face. I blinked a couple of times and remembered what I was doing. I forced myself to look at the food, and grabbed one of the napkins that held French toast and began nibbling at the soft crust. "That's all you want?" he asked. I nodded and continued eating my French toast. After about three bites I decided that I could afford to steal a glimpse at Ethelios. When I looked at him I saw that he was pushing a napkin with eggs towards me and hungrily pulled the rest near himself. He picked up the makeshift plate and put the whole thing in his mouth, including the napkin. He began chewing and quickly swallowed. He picked up the next one and plopped it into his mouth just like the one previously. After about three minutes all of the napkins of food were gone except for the eggs he had put aside for me.
