I stood at the door, waiting for Janet to answer. I've been going to her house often since Mindy and Cunningham started dating. At first Janet was my escape from my new loneliness, and break up with Mindy. But overtime I've grown fairly fond of her. Its fitting really. The two rejected becoming allies.

"It's about time you showed up. What took you so long?" Janet said as she swung the door open.

"I-"

"Don't care, come inside quickly. And what do you think about my hair?"

I made my place over by the couch, as I tried to process everything that Janet had just said. When I really got a good look at her, I noticed the change. I've never seen Janet with her hair straightened before. Usually, it's kept down in her natural curls. Honestly, it didn't make that much of a difference in my opinion.

"I liked it better curly. It's bolder."

Janet seemed a bit insulted, but she didn't say anything.

"Did I say something wrong?" I say, confused.

Janet sighed. "No" She ran her polished fingers through her hair. "I just wish that I knew you preferred my hair curly."

"Why would that matter? Are you trying to impress me or something?"

Janet averts her eyes. "Of course I'm not trying to impress you. That'd be ridiculous -didn't you have something to tell me?"

"Yes," I recollected my thoughts. "My mother's getting married."

"Oh good. Tell her I said congratulations."

"Not good. She can't get married to anyone. She's a prostitute. That means whatever they have is probably just 'business'"

"So?"

"So its not genuine. There's a difference between real and temporary love. They feel similar at first but sooner or later you start to realize that you were wrong. And at that point, the damage is already done."

"That's one way of thinking about it. How long have they been together?" Janet found a spot next to me on the couch.

"According to her, a year, but I just met him the other day. I hate him already. He's a sketchy guy, and he kind of reminds me of Cunningham."

"Really Hye, Cunningham? We've already been through this. I thought we all agreed that we were all cool now."

Of course we're not cool. I can't stand the thought of that guy. Who in the right mind would ever be okay with the man who stole his girlfriend? I only put up with him for Mindy and Janet's sake. I couldn't care less about Cunningham.

"I guess, but my mom has no idea what kind of trouble she's getting herself into. I swear she's like a kid sometimes, that's why I need to stop this. I'll just make him hate me enough to cancel the wedding. Wanna help?"

"I don't know if that's a good idea. I think that a year may be too short for marriage, but breaking them up? Why meddle with her life anyway? You're basically an adult now, you'll be on your own soon so why bother?"

I've been extremely stupid these past four years of high school. I never did any work and I barely showed up to class. My only motivation in life was to get high and run away from my problems. Now I don't have enough credits to get my diploma. I planned on quitting and making a living illegally, but Janet convinced me to continue my education and enroll for a GED. I know I don't need to be concerned with my mother but after her first divorce, I can't let her get hurt like that again. How do I explain to someone with a complete family, what it feels like to only have your mother?

"I'll help you," Janet said as if reading my mind.

"Wait, what? Weren't you just against it?"

"Yup, and I'm still against it. This is a terrible idea, and I'm pretty sure it'll backfire -like really badly. But I'm gonna trust that you know what you're doing, so I'm in."

Before I had a chance to reply, Janet's father walked in through the front door. He seemed exhausted and frustrated at the same time.

"Hi dad, you're home early. Did something happen at work?"

"Hye, Janet. Hello to you both."

"Hello, sir." I don't know much about Janet's family, so I don't know what either of her parents do or where they work. My guess is that they have a top position in a family-owned industry because they're crazy rich.

"Hey Janet, can we maybe talk privately?" Janet's dad said abruptly.

"Erm, yes but...why?" Janet replied.

"Baby, I didn't think it could happen again. It's so unexpected and I'm sorry to say this, but he's back."
