The address that Veronica sent me led to a tiny brown house. She said it was her grandma's place.
'I'm here' I texted her.
Instantly, an incredibly beautiful Hispanic girl with dyed blonde hair appeared from the front of the house. She smiled at me as she opened the door to my black Toyota.
"You must be Hye Jin. I'm Veronica Sanchez. Nice to meet you." She seemed genuinely pleasant.
"Hi," I say in my usual dull tone. I didn't speak to her again until we reached my house.
"Okay, so let's start off with George Washington." She opened up a college textbook on the kitchen table. "We'll do a quick review of each President and their influence on the United States, sound good?"
"Sure"
Knock knock
I went over to open the front door. Surprisingly, Mindy and Cunningham were standing at my porch. Mindy wore a pink blouse with blue jeans while Cunningham had on a plain white T with grey shorts and white air force ones.
"Are you two lost?" I asked dryly.
"No, we came here for you," Mindy said. "May we come in?"
I nodded and led them inside the kitchen where Veronica was. "This is my tutor Veronica Sanchez. Veronica, Mindy, and Cunningham."
"Hi, how are you?" She greeted them warmly. Cunningham was stunned, probably by her beauty. Even though his girlfriend is right there, he's doing a terrible job of hiding his emotions.
"I'm good," he said eyeing her like she was a goddess. "What about you?"
"I'm fine." She replied.
"Anyway." Mindy turned to me. "We didn't mean to interrupt you so we'll be quick. We're throwing a surprise birthday party for Mrs. Abreau on the 3rd and we wanted you to be there. It'd be really good if you came, Hye."
Why? I wondered. "I might pop up." I shrugged.
"Okay then, we'll leave you two to it. Good luck studying." Mindy rushed Cunningham out of my house.
When I turned to Veronica, she was smiling really hard at me. "So who's the chick?"
"What do you care?"
She shrugged. "curiosity."
I guess there's no harm in telling her since she doesn't even live around here. "She's my ex and also Cunningham's girlfriend"
"Ouch."
"Yeah, but I'm over it."
"When I said ouch, it wasn't for you, it was for her. That Cunningham was obviously drooling over me."
"Don't get cocky," I said. "They are very much in love."
"Whoa, for an ex-boyfriend you're sure supportive." She said amused by me.
"Cunningham may be a horrible person but he was there for her when she needed him. He makes her really happy and that's something I couldn't do. Mindy deserves to be this happy so don't try to ruin it."
Veronica began to laugh. "You think I want Cunningham? Don't be ridiculous I was just stating the obvious. You, on the other hand, I wouldn't mind..."
I rolled my eyes. "Can we just focus on history."
"Of course" She smiled.
I could hardly pay attention after about an hour of studying the first three Presidents of the U.S. Before I died of boredom, there was another knocking at my door.
"Someone's sure popular." Veronica placed her hand on her cheek.
"Come in," I said.
Janet came into the kitchen wearing a short green romper. "This is the tutor you were talking about?" She glanced at her watch. "I thought you said you would be done by now."
Veronica checked her phone. "She's right, I've got to catch the bus. Veronica by the way" She reached to shake Janet's hand.
"Janet" She shook back.
"She's pretty," Janet said after she left. "What do you think, would you go for it?"
"Not my type." I shook my head.
"Yeah, I could tell." Janet took a seat in Veronica's former spot. "So about this plan to sabotage your mother's fiance?"
"I haven't really thought of anything yet. I've just been acting hostile lately but he's annoyingly persistent. Oh, and he invited me to dinner. Said I could bring friends or whatever."
"Hye, that's perfect. You should invite me, Mindy, Cunningham, and Victoria."
"Its Veronica, and why? I wasn't planning on actually going."
"It's simple, go and humiliate him in front of all those people you'll invite. Men with money hate humiliation. I'd know since I live with one."
I pondered on the idea. I don't really want to invite any of those people except for Janet. But this plan may actually work. "Okay, I will."
"Good. I need to buy a dress right away! I'll pick something up for you too. I know you hate shopping."
This is gonna be a long weekend
