His Eyes

Buster and I started to walk out of the dorm buildings and out of the University borders. I researched this area thoroughly online and saw a park only two miles away from here. So I jog with my little puppy down the sidewalk and I could tell Buster enjoyed it. I mean, he's probably wanted to get out of that car that we were trapped in for hours. I think we both needed some fresh air.

I glance to the right of me and see in the distance something I hadn't seen in a while; a beach! Man, I've missed feeling the sand in my toes, the salt water in my veins. It's been a couple years since I've swam in the waves..my parents and I went to Disneyland when I was 12 and that was the last time I had that ocean experience. Truthfully, I was a kid at heart and would do anything to go back to Disney. The atmosphere of fairytales and adventure always made me excited.

..My mind is wandering as I now walked down the sidewalk for a few minutes. But what I didn't expect was Buster's yank jerk on my hand, causing myself to lose grip of the leash. I look up and see my puppy begin to run, feet in front of me, barking and chasing a squirrel. "Buster!" I yell and begin to run after him. How did this happen? I let my thoughts get the best of me! I should have been paying attention. I just stay focused and call after Buster, but he continues to sprint after the poor rodent. I feel my heart pound on my chest as my dog runs faster and I decline in speed.

He turned the corner and as I started to, I trip over my foot, crashing into the pavement. I groan when my face hits the cement. Ouch..well that'll leave a mark. My twist my head and see my puppy run off in the distance. "Buster!!" I push my hand against the ground, pushing myself up weakly. Come on Becca, get up! I obey and trudge quickly in the direction Buster ran towards.

Time went by and I searched around and lost sight of Buster. I decided to call after him, "Buster! Buster..come here boy! Buster!" I listened for any sound but there were no more barks and I was growing worried. Where was he..did I just lose the only precious thing from home I had? I twist my body around and shout, "Buster! Come out here please! You're scaring me.." I head towards the park we were originally going to and scan the area. "Buster!"

A well known bark could be heard a few yards from me. I spun around and asked, "Buster? Is that you?" My body relaxed when I saw him sitting on the grassy floor by a park bench. I sigh in relief, "Oh my gosh! Buster!" I jogged over to where he was and noticed someone crouching next to him; a boy. I paused seeing the young man petting my dog. My parents never really liked me having a lot of people touch Buster or associate with me. They were always paranoid that some creep would want to take me in their white van to never be seen again. But..this person was different.

The boy looked about my age even if he was bent over at the moment. He had light brown hair and a pretty average stature, slightly shorter then most college guys. I step on a leaf, it crackles under my foot, getting the guy's attention. He looked up at me and I saw his eyes, they sent a shockwave into my heart. They were a deep blue, crystalized around the rim. It spoke volume; firm yet kind enough to see on the surface.

The boy gave me a lopsided smile and I felt the butterflies in my stomach grow. What was happening.. I point at Buster awkwardly, "Looks like you found my dog." The guy turned towards my pet as well, "More like he found me. I was just sitting here and then I see a white blurry object coming straight at me." I bent down with a giggle and stroked my puppy's fur, "That's Buster for ya. Thanks for staying with him.." I saw him smile wider, "Of course. It's not like I have anything better to do," I met his gaze as he asked, "Have you been to this park with him before?"

"Oh, no. I literally just moved here a half hour ago from Oregon. I'm going to Pepperdine University for college." I saw him give a look of surprise yet interest, "Wow, then welcome to Cali! I bet you'll enjoy it here, I know I do. That must've been a far drive." I nodded, "Thank you and oh believe me, it was!" We both laughed and I can't help but be drawn to this man. His kind personality is just so infectious. Who was this stranger? I part some hair from my face, "I didn't catch your name.." The boy realized and rubbed the back of his neck, then extending his arm for a handshake, "I'm sorry, my name is Devan."
