We Meet Again

It has been a week since I got my job working at Starbucks. It's been a pretty fun job so far and I started getting to know Kiara a little more. I learned that she was adopted when she was nine years old, she had moved to California to get out of a bad environment of bullying at school when she was fifteen, and everything went worse once her family attended a church. I was very honored to hear her heartbreaking backstory and the gruesome details of what the bullies did to her. All I'm saying about it is...it was something that should've gotten the bullies put to prison for life.

Anyways, I shared my dull tales to her as well and even some of the insecurities I've faved and surprisingly, my shame of my faith. I don't have any idea why that came out when it did but it felt good to tell someone you know wont judge you. Kiara seemed to understand and even invited me to go to her young adult group at her church. I took up on her offer but I don't know if I will follow through with it.

Also my roommate is turning out worse than I expected. When she says "I'll be five seconds", it turns into a half hour. She's like a tyrant wanting to snap me in two! I didn't do anything to her! I guess she has bug up her——I need to remain positive. That's what I keep telling myself. It's really hard when icky vicky is sticking her nose up at me.

Today was an uneventful shift at work. Nothing seemed to be moving. There was a customer here and there but other than that, it was vacant. I had taken a ten minute cool down and went in the break room for a bit but it was starting to get stuffy in there so I decided to head outside for some air. "Hey Kiara," I call to her rubbing my face tiredly, "I'm going to head outside for a bit." She nodded but concern filled her expression, "Sure, you okay?"

"Yeah, just a little warm, nothing that some fresh air couldn't fix," I say reassuringly but I still felt ill. I don't know what it is though I push it aside and go outside the back doors. I feel a small breeze and I sigh in relief. I look up at the sky and take a deep breath. Peace..I need peace. Why do I feel so drawn to this place?

I turn into another direction and close my eyes softly when suddenly my body collides with another with a sudden bump. There was splash of a liquid dropping to the ground and a sound of two grunts, coming from me and something else. My torso leaned into the figure and I felt hands grab my arms to steady me. I look up and I see...crystal blue eyes. I gasp. It was Devan Key! The man that I thought I'd never get to see again...was right in front of me. I didn't know what to say or do but stand their perplexed. It was as if someone grabbed the words out if my throat.

"Uh, hey...you're Becca right?" Devan asked with a side smirk but at the same time I couldn't read his emotions. How did he remember my name though?? I just nod at him and look down to hide my blush. As I'm doing so I come to realize I knocked his drink from his hand and it was now spilled across the sidewalk! Oh no I did not just do that! I pull away from him and point at the evident mess, "Oh my gosh, Devan. I'm soooo sorry!!" I bend down to pick up the cracked cup and I noticed it was a Starbucks coffee. Was he just in the shop when I was on a break? I heard the man reply to my blubbering, "Don't worry about it. It's all good."

"No it's not," I say back feeling horrible. My thoughts rattle through my brain on how to fix this then I find a solution. "Here, come with me," I reach for his arm and pull him towards the direction of the back door of the store. I bring him inside and lead him to the counter. "Kiara!" I yell frantically as I stand there awkwardly next to famous. She comes over and looks from Devan to me, "What's up, girlie?" I begin to explain, "I was outside and I accidentally ran into..this customer and dropped his drink. Could he have a refund—or I'll pay!"

"It really isn't a big deal," Devan argued keeping his cool. How could he do that? I could never be calm when someone spilled my coffee, something I paid for... My vision grows hazy and I could hear Kiara ask, "Becca? Rebecca, are you okay?" I put my hand on my forehead, "Yeah..yeah I'm just getting dizzy." I feel soft fingertips hold my arm. "I think she needs to get outside for fresh air."

"I can't leave my post to tend to her.."

"I can watch her." What did I just hear?? Devan was going to stay with me?? Why would he—a celebrity—do this for me? Before I could argue, a rush of pain coursed my temple and Devan and Kiara exchanged an exit.
Before I knew it, the young boy was leading me out the door. It was silent for a few moments when we both sat down on a bench. I breathed in the fresh air and suddenly a wash a relief came over me. The pain was gone and now I could see more clearly.

Nervously, I glance over and see Devan Key sitting next to me with a smile, "Are you feeling any better?" I sigh and look away shamefully, "Yeah I am..I don't know why that happened." I tilt my head and see the young man watch me with his crystal eyes sparking, "It's probably the change in climate. You said you lived in Oregon right? We might be neighboring states but the weather isn't so similar." That made a lot of sense. What didn't make sense was what he was doing hanging around me.

"I must look ridiculous, don't I?" Devan shook his head with a small laugh, "Not at all. It happens to all of us one time to another." I pull some hair from my eyes and my heart thumps crazily against my chest. I examine his stature, he was quite handsome.., "So..why didn't you tell me you were Devan Key? Young brother of Collins Key who was a Americas Got Talent sensation?" He rubbed the back of his neck, "I don't really like to introduce myself with that label. I want people to know of me..as me," he shrugged and leaned forward on the bench, "you know what I mean?"

I do. I get it when people put a sign on people before they even get to know them. I nod, "Of course, now...let me get to know the real Devan." A grin breaks across his face that just lights me up. We both talk with one another for what felt like hours. I listened to the goofy stories of his childhood, many of which we laughed about. Hearing his tales made me realize even if he was famous, the life he had was just like any other. Everyone gets it confused that celebrities live crazy lives, but they were just normal people.

I tell him mine which weren't very exciting in my opinion, but Devan looked to be interested in it so I continued, "...and I got so scared I had a live crab in my hands, I dropped it and it fled for the ocean." His crystal blue eyes never left mine, "How old were you?"

"Nine, and that was the last time I've ever stepped foot on a beach." Devan looked to be shocked at that answer, "Wow, that's such a long time given that you are 18. You should go before it gets too cold." I agreed with him, I missed that place, "Maybe I will take Buster over there for our next walk." Devan nodded but added with a point of a finger, "Yeah but don't let him take off running like last time." I see him laugh and I join him, "Oh you bet I won't!"

Suddenly, Devan checks his phone when a buzzing sound came from it. He looks at the message, disappointment crossed his face, "I have to go. Collins needs me back at home." I frown a little, not again.., "Oh." He looked back at me and saddened, "But hey, it was fun talking to you." Wait..he said he had fun talking to me? Was this a dream...? It was silent for a while then Devan cleared his throat, "But here, I'll put your number in my phone and we can maybe meet up again sometime."

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!! OKAY BE COOL BECCA DONT BLOW THIS!! "Uh..yeah totally!" Ew that sounded cringy! He didn't seem to notice and I gave him my number. "Thanks, I'll see ya later Becca."

"Cool, see you soon," I say as I watch him walk off. Wow...what is happening to me?

"Becca? Becca! Are you better now," the was Kiara called from the back door but I could barely hear her. I allowed my thoughts to take over...
