Melifina: The Adventure Begins

A New Friend

"I-It's...Umm..."

"Yes?" I said, in my kindest, sweetest voice.

"..." She was silent.

"Oh, it's okay. You don't have to answer now. You can tell me when you want to, or not at all. It's your choice." You know, I'm starting to think that she isn't socially awkward. She's just shy.

There was an awkward silence between us.

That's when she noticed that I dropped my phone after our collision. She bent down to grab it and the screen turned on by mistake. She then saw the notification that showed that I was listening to BTS, a k-pop group that I listen to. Her nervous face turned into a face of shock.

Great job Eli! Now she'll know that your some k-pop fan girl wannabe. Great first impression! Note the sarcasm.

The shy girl just stared at the phone screen in her hand. That's when I thought it was all over. This supposedly super shy girl was gonna turn mean in a blink of an eye. Unless she was actually shy, but was just silently judging me. That's when she did something that I didn't expect at all: She spoke.

"Y-You listen to k-pop?" She asked, obviously forcing the words out. She had a blank face while saying it, still staring at my phone screen.

"Umm...maybe?" I said, obviously embarrassed. Geez, could I have been anymore awkward? No.

Her eyes widen up and a smile starts to form on her face. Wait, she was smiling? Wow, I did not expect that.

"I can't believe! Like, I literally can't believe it! I'm so, so, so happy that I finally know someone other than myself that listens to k-pop! And your screen saver!? You watch anime? AMAZING! The name's Cadance, by the way." She exclaimed with the sweetest, and gentlest, voice that I've ever heard.

I was shocked. Surprised. Flabbergasted! I knew that my face showed these extreme emotions that I was having. Cadance noticed this.

"Oh, I-I'm sorry about that I just get carried away, especially when I'm fangirling." She said, clearly embarrassed. She blushed a light shade of pink, almost the same color as her hair.

I blinked a few times just staring at her, trying to process what had just happened. Then I smiled at her.

"No, no. It's alright. If you knew me, I would've acted the same exact way. There's just not enough k-pop fans in the world." I said, followed by a giggle.

That definitely made her smile. It looked like she needed that.

"Thanks." She said, handing me my phone. I grab it out of her hand, including the ear buds. I put my phone in my pocket, about to start listening to music again. I placed the left ear bud in. As I was just about to put in the other, I looked up at Cadence. She was about to say something, but kept her mouth shut and turned away.

That got me thinking. Maybe, there's more to life than just music. For example, a shy girl who's just looking for a friend.

As she was walking away, I looked at her uniform. Wait a minute, she has the same uniform as me! How did I miss that? It was either because of the collision, or the fangirling.

"W-Wait a sec!" I shouted at Cadence, which made her stop in her tracks and turn towards me. I ran after her, who was several yards ahead of me.

"Y-Yes?"

"You... go to... Melifina... as well?" I asked, gasping for air between words, trying to catch my breath.

"Yeah, I do." She said.

"Ok, good. That means we can both show up late together. Woohoo..." I said, with a sarcastic cheer.

"What do you mean? School doesn't start till 8:30. It's only 7:55. "

My face was frozen with the look of regret and shock. I struggled so much this morning for nothing.

"B-B-But I was sure the website said 7:30!"

"Really? I guess they didn't update the school's homepage. 7:30 was last year's time. They added an extra hour." She explained.

"I can't believe it..." I said, still upset that I rushed for nothing.

"Well, think of it this way," Cadence started. "If you weren't in such a rush, you wouldn't have met me!" She said with a big smile, which made me smile.

"Hey, wanna listen to some BTS?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

"Is that even a question?" She said.

We each took one ear bud and put it in. I pressed play. I knew from there on that we would be the best of friends.
